EDIT: Talked to IR and I guess that's how they are supposed to sound.... Stupid me, so I am going to use it til it breaks.... Someone with the power MIGHT change the title of this thread for me before some IR representative stumbles upon it and sues me for slander or something...

Wow all the hoopla about this IR Hammerhead tool, so I said hey I am going to order one. Found a deal on ebay guy had a "new in box" hammerhead 3/8 for 200 buy it now. SO I order that like a month ago, finally get it today, run out to the shop and hook it up. Absolutely sounds like ****. Shakes my hand like crazy sounds like they didn't get it assembled all the way at the factory inside. I'm uploading a little video of the sounds it makes for y'all to listen to. I think it is absolutely a waste of money if they cant even send you one that works. Anybody else got one of these things????

My Matco dealer,Ronald Bishop has seen this too from a couple customers on his route and sent a couple back to IR.Has not heard from IR on them yet.He won't sell them since this happened.I was at an Auto Value tech show on Saturday and said this to the IR rep there whom had a bad attitude. This IR rep said he never heard of this happening yet.

Now you know why it was being sold as "new in box" for $50-$60 below invoice.

I'd ship it back to the seller, there must be a return policy.

i heard IR has had some problems with some of the first ones made. call IR and they will literally send someone to your shop and inspect it with all your applications on site.

I kinda think you may be right... You could tell he had opened it and tested it because it was all unwrapped and had his paw prints on it.... Seller had "no returns" on his ad... I did pay with paypal though so that might be some hope of getting this took care of

"No returns" means nothing in eBay's eyes if the buyer claims, "item not as advertised".

Hi there,

first post.

I have a IR Hammerhead 3/8" paid $309 from cornwell (could have got for $240 if I was patient) http://www.tooltopia.com/ingersoll-rand-2015max.aspx

Anyway I think you got a bum tool, call IR tool hasn't even been out a year (i think) just tell them you got it off the tool guy and he stopped coming around. (ain't that the truth sometimes)

I don't like the way it sounds when I first pull the trigger, but thats all I don't like.

I have torqued lugnuts on a F-Series to 150ft/lbs and it still busted them loose.

I keep saying one of these days I'll upload a video review.

Hey thanks for the reply. I think its a bum too but IR don't think so... so I said I'll give it a few weeks of good all day use I guess I'll report back on here if it does.... The seller even called me up after I emailed him (real nice guy btw) and told me that they are supposed to sound like that  ok that's fine I guess I can live with it as long as it works, we shall see. I admit though this is the first hammerhead I have used. Maybe it will break in

I have one at work and it doesn't sound like yours. Mine sounds like an impact and doesn't make that whirring sound. Have you oiled and greased it?
I think it may be defective. Good luck, sometimes Ebay isn't the bargain we'd like it to be.

I don't know how it's supposed to sound, but that doesn't sound good at all!

I'd return it to the seller and make a big fuss over it. OR see if you can get it serviced/traded in with a local dealer.

Sounds like you may have been screwed by the seller. You have a link to the ebay transaction. I may want to put this seller on my no buy list.

How does it sound when you are actually impacting on a bolt? They aren't meant for running free speed, what you are hearing is the impact mechanism impacting then free speeding then impacting.

i've never owned an impact tool that sounded like ball bearings were knocking around inside when free spinning.

This is a little different, there is a set of bevel gears in front of the impact mechanism to turn the corner, so there is a little bit of drag there as opposed to the anvil of a normal impact that has very little resistance.

You may be on to something here. It does sound like I think it ought to when I am on a bolt, no load free speeding like I was doing it does kinda sound different than I guess I think it should but that might be the way the angle head is made, I don't have a clue....

EXACTLY why I was concerned about this thing..... It just kinda sounds funny, but I guess it might could use some grease in the hammer assembly I have the special little grease gun at work I will have to grease it real good tomorrow and see how it sounds

Mine doesnt sound like that. Im sure the video has some distortion to it, but mine makes a consistent impact sound. Theres no ringing or variables in the pattern. I know for a fact the early ones had recalls and it is quite possible thats why the user sold it with explicit "no returns" policy.

The bottom line is paypal will take your side if you are unhappy with your defective tool especially if the seller described it as in working condition. Paypal requires you to first contact the seller and wait a few days before anything happens. Start right away if you are not happy with it.
