Hello All,

Our contractor just finished a detached custom garage for us that's been about a year in the making and they did a fantastic job! The contractor wasn't nearly as big an issue as the city was because our property is considered historical and we can't just build anything we want--we can to a point. The replacement structure has to match the look of the house (Craftsman style, 1905) and some aspect of the original structure that we demolished. I considered simply letting the termites consume the old garage and then taking that problem to the city but I'm sure that wouldn't have worked. Complicating matters was the neighbor with a property dispute, but a surveyor solved all that so the contractor could start.

All that's behind us now and my wife and I are now dealing with the fun part. A third of the garage is split into a workroom (art studio) that she's always wanted and the rest is where I'm going smoke cigars and work!

Our next big project is drywalling her art studio and leaving my side alone! (but I mind change my mind later about drywall...)

Anyway, looking forward to outfitting my new garage with advice and tips from this forum.

Hi - We have a newly built garage as well. There is still so much to do (and I'm looking forward to it). I'll be on this site perusing all the pertinent topics. Looking forward to seeing your updates, too
