I've been reading the threads on cordless tools and absorbing the stories and then I see the post about the battery powered welder and that is intriguing to me.

Today, like a bolt, it hit me what the ultimate expression of liberation from cords would be. A light, semi-affordable, battery powered battery charging station. Something capable of a dozen or better charges that could be recharged by 12 volt, 110, or what the heck, solar. I'm a genius, right?

Oh, Milwaukee, if you're listening, I also want an M18 air compressor for inflating tires in an emergency.

Don't they already have that on the market for smart phones and tablets?

I don't think you're gonna see that from Milwaukee. They've got the "cigarette lighter" chargers and that's enough for me.

But yeah, I'd love to see a compressor like the Nextec, but truly capable of 80psi

I think Sportsman guide has it.
They call it a counter top power supply.
It's $600ish.
I'm forty miles east of nowhere so I can't look it up.

Thanks, Bill. I'll google that.

I think he is looking for exactly what the cell phone ones are, but instead capable of charging a higher voltage and larger battery. I agree that would be nice, although a light (ie not lead acid) would be costly.

They have lithium boat batteries though? So it must be possible, just maybe not enough market at the price point it would likely be.

I was more daydreaming than shopping. I saw the welders battery pack and specifications and it jogged my memory to a portable workbench project I had drawn up years ago with a battery/inverter system. I abandoned the idea for being unnecessary, but it still comes to mind from time to time.

Deep Cycle marine battery and an inverter will do the same thing.

The money is always in making it a kit.

Th ultimate would be wireless charging. You could be charging while using the tool wirelessly.

The next best thing after that would be high torque and high sensitivity, telekinetic powers. I can hardly wait.

At this point batteries would simply disappear. Your already providing wireless current to the tool, just add a capacitor or two to smooth out any hiccups in the flow. Now you have wirelessly powered tools, cellphones, TVs, cars, blenders, really anything that runs on electricity.

If you're in defection mode/mood-----DeWalt has one. Works great for this AND a lot more.

They already have some pretty potent solar power banks and with energy and battery tech improving at a fast clip I'd imagine it won't be too long until we see some sort of portable solar battery charger for tools that's fairly efficient

HF is working on these using driven time crystals. Due to high R&D costs it may only be several short light years in a frozen dark vacuum before they can be mass produced at affordable prices.

The goal zero yetis are cool but still have long downtime periods for recharging although with enough solar panels they come close (if the sun is out). What we're waiting for is a perpetual motion machine, a drill that charges itself as it runs or cars that recharge themselves as the wheels turn. The problem is generators and alternators themselves draw energy to do what they do. Not just power to spin their shafts but magnetic fields must be overcome in order for them to convert rotational movement into stored power. You need to burn fuel or tap into solar power for them to do what they do therefor incorporating them into drills or cars is self defeating.

Quantum physicists are working on it but don't hold your breath. Some molecules contain atoms that revolve by themselves but no one's been able to bring this characteristic out to the tangible world.

If only there were some way to get around that pesky inverse square law.

I had an idea for a battery-powered car that would use the wheels as alternators, much like a Harley-Davidson uses the engine, to have a long-range vehicle. I'm still, not certain it couldn't work, but I figured if I thought of it much smarter people were way ahead of me, so never persued it.

You mean like the Prius? They're not exactly long range. You know, entropy an all that nonsense. It takes more energy to overcome the drag from inductive generation than it creates.
