So, how does this 'buying' a unit work? I don't know about the TV version and I was hoping you could explain the rules, upside, downside, etc., etc..

Oh, I'm guessing that you deserve a big 'YOU ****' on this one. Please post plenty o'pics showing all the booty; that way we can rate the number of 'STARS' we should award you for your suckiness! lol

Ive been to 2 auctions. Both of them had been cherry picked. It was painfully obvious that someone had gone through all of the units and removed anything that could be resold and all they were selling was old clothes and particle board furniture that they would normally have to pay to have hauled to the dump.

Ever since "storage wars" and "american pickers" came on TV people think anything with rust or faded paint is worth a fortune.....

It is an auction, they open the unit in front of you...you can not go inside the unit or touch anything, and then you bid. You usually get 24-48 hours to clean it out depending on the location. This one I ended up paying to rent it for the remainder of the month because of how busy I am lately. They usually cut you a deal if it`s a big unit, especially if they like ya.

Some locations DO cherry pick and stage the units,I don`t go to those locations because I know better. You can generally tell when something has been rummaged through or staged though.

Damn, great find! I need to get out and see what I can find in my area. If anything, just get to the auction and see what others are bidding on. All in the luck of the draw.

FoMoCoPower, thanks for the explanation. I might have to see if there's any auction action in my neck of the woods. I would imagine it's a cash-in-hand operation.
