Estate/Tag sale a week or so ago. Had this old Flat square Anvil on a stand in the basement. I think this is a sawmakers anvil. (?) I'd estimate 150 -200 lbs. $200. As im standing there looking at it, considering it, taking a picture of it, a guy hands the guy the money. o well, ya snooze, ya looze.

Anybody got any info? is it a sawmakers anvil ? whats are the markings?

I would say its neat given the stampings, but it just looks like a 200lb piece of metal in the shape of a square. Not too interesting otherwise. But that's just me... It all depends on what you do for a hobby and what you would use it for. I have the problem of finding cool stuff like that and when I really step back and think about it, I find that it usually wouldn't help me do anything I already do, differently.

I would say you missed a real deal.---An anvil with surface area like that is better than a conventional anvil in the right situation.

If I scored that thing for 200, it would become my "cold" multi purpose pounding surface, now that garage journal has scared me from using my real anvil shaped anvils for striking cold.

That is a piece of annealed Hardtem die steel, it is used to make forging dies. Hardtem is a brand name made by Composite Forgings.

That anvil is extremely impressive to me in that it enticed a response from sak444, who has been a member since 2008 and had no previous posts until today. It is probably worth a fortune!

 And the fact that the post comes over a month and a half after the initial post proves that one can be a very, very infrequent Garage Journal visitor after all!

I,m a retired tool and die maker from a forging mfg. I saw the logo and it sparked an interest. I,m also a longtime lurker.

I wouldn't lose sleep over not paying $200 for that. It's nothing special. For $25, it would be a handy piece to have around for banging on. At $200, it's a recipe for buyers remorse.
