Having never used one before, I figured I'd get the big kit since I can afford it right now and start off right. Any pointers? I learned the load pro with my dmm first, then figured I'd get a pp3.

Dont just go injecting 12v or ground into circuits all willy nilly. Keep those types of tests to things light motors or maybe lights but even then you.have to be very careful. It is useful no doubt but dont let it replace your DMM. That is still the safest tool to test todays vehicles.

Should have waited until the PP4 comes out. They introduced it and should be for sale shortly. Looks like it has a lot more features.

As for the PP3 it is nice for certain things. Like Brownsfan said keep your fingers away from that button unless you know for sure what your sending power to and you will be fine. Another thing I have been burned on is false readings by the PP3. The ground will show ground some times when it really isn't. Also since you mentioned loadpro remember that a 12V reading on the PP3 might be misleading without a load. I got burned earlier this year when I was testing a no low beam issue using my PP3 and had a brain fart. PP3 was showing battery and ground at light but no low beams. Put my loadpro on and found voltage dropped down next to nothing with a load. Was a corroded wire.

Buy a replacement switch - when you apply power the contacts arc. The PP3 manual suggests pushing the switch before touching the probe to the wire/terminal to save the switch while sacrificing the probe tip. Switch costs $12, probe tip costs $15.

Why do people who start these threads think everyone knows what they're talking about?

Or is this the same sort of snobbery BMW owners use when talking about their E39 or whatever......

Not everyone knows what a PP3 or E39 or XYZ20 is you know, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't like to be part of the discussion.

PP3 is the powerprobe 3, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007QV0R7W/?tag=atomicindus08-20. It's a pretty nice electrical tester, I use it and my fluke. The PP4 is coming out soon and looks like it has a few more features.

If you dont know what a pp3 is you probably don't hang in this category much. The pp3 is a great tool. Honestly all the cool new features the pp4 has most people wont know how to use them and what any of it means. The pp3 is best for anyone beginning or having more limited knowledge of electrical. Just becarefull like said previously dont go sending power and ground down wires all willy nilly. Ive personally watched some people blow out abs modules and what not. Gets expensive quick.

I personally haven't had the time to read up on the pp4. It doesn't really do anything you cant do with a good dvom and a load pro.

Is the difference between the 3 and 4 more multimeter like functionality?

From what I have seen yes.

Yes a dvom will do most of what the PP4 will do, depending on what dvom you have. The pp4 does AC and DC readings and also pulse width and fuel injector testing and some other neat things. I wasn't too impressed with the hook and never bought one but I'm kind of liking the PP4. But how much I like it will all depend on the price when it's announced. If it's 200+ then I probably won't even think about getting one.

Absolutely love mine! Use it almost daily and love the extra extension leads too. Its great because you always know you have a good ground unlike a test light.

Yes, thank you so much for telling me what it is, instead you continue the snobbery "if you don't know what it is you don't spend much time in this category"

Hope the op gets the answers he's after, and I know who's posts not to read from now on.....

I explained what it was and also included a link to one on amazon.

Seems to me the only one being a snob here is u bud. Your the one posting uselessly not contributing anything to the thread topic at all. Don't really know what your beef is about a damn Acronym that almost everyone on this forum uses. :dunno:

There have been 3 or 4 posts about the power probes in this forum in the past week and I'm pretty sure someone or someoneS have used the abbreviation PP3 in all of them. If anyone read any of those other threads then reading a couple of the top replies would quickly cue in an unfamiliar reader clicking on this thread. It just shows you probably didn't read any of those threads which could be taken that you don't read this section as much as others rather than you happened not to read any of those specific threads for whatever reason- take the comment with a grain of salt and move on. In turn I made the same assumption the OP did, that everyone knew what the PP3 was so in future I'll try not to abbreviate in titles for the above.

We're all here about tools - some of us use them, some of us collect them... let's all try not to be one.:drink:

Jagman, maybe if you post just one more time about how everyone else (especially BMW enthusiasts, apparently) are "snobs", we will all see the light and your mission to show us the error of our ways will be complete...

Someone on a tool forum used a common (among said forum) acronym to describe a popular tool - gasp!

Also, every gearhead uses chassis codes and other shorthand to describe common vehicles that it is reasonable to assume other gearheads are familiar with: e39, W123, SN95, AE86, EK, NA, FD, 3rd Gen f-body, C6, 996, k-car, etc.

Yeah so, I should have everything covered with the PP3 (power probe iii) and load pro, right?

Does your meter do AC voltage RMS? Your meter probably won't do injector testing either. But for most things your meter and PP3 should be fine, it's been what I've used for years. You can never have enough electrical diagnostic tools. I'm still waiting on a price for the PP4 but if it isn't too high I will sell my PP3 and get the PP4. I like some of the features the PP4 has that the PP3 doesn't. Also want to start looking at scopes.

Why sell the 3? Like you said you cant have enough electrical test tools. Getting rid of tools just goes against everything ever said on this forum. Just kidding with you. I may look into the 4 as well just depends on the price like you said. I would just move the the 3 to the road tool set.

I would keep it but it would be nice to get some money for it to put towards the PP4. I don't do this for a living so it's hard to justify having the PP3 and PP4. Too many other tools I "need" to buy yet!

Pretty much. What kind of work do you do?

Automotive professionally, but the PP3 would be for my home box. I'm not allowed to have tools at my job due to space restrictions so what tools I do buy aren't abused on the job. But I do bring my work home sometimes (not literally). I do a lot of car audio installs. Speakers, head units, amps and subs, etc. as well so I see this getting used a lot.

I'm glad you guys mentioned the Loadpro. I have several multimeters and a PP3 but had never even heard of a Loadpro. After watching their demo video I think I'll be getting one.

I have both and they both have their place in the tool box but I don't leave the Loadpro leads in all the time, they are just too large. I actually use the short finder in the master kit more the the PP3.

Same here. My loadpro leads only come out when I need them specifically.

Personally I like the loadpro tips so I leave mine on my meter all the time. The hollow tips makes holding the probes in place a lot easier then pointed tips. Yes the leads are a little bigger but I've never found that to be a problem. If need be I can always grab another set of leads but I've worked under dashes and in doors and under hood and never had an issue.

What a big kit. And I can think of a use for everything in there. Are they all gold plated or just the master kit?
