I usually don't stop at garage sales but as I stopped for a stop sign, I happened to look over and saw that they had a small selection of tools. Figured "What the hell" and I went up. Just about everything was picked over so I asked if they had anything else that they were considering putting out. The elderly lady said that there was some type of "clamp" in the garage but is was too heavy for her to move and that I could go look at it if I wanted to. So, I walked into the garage and found a vise with a $5 price tag on it. I carried it out, and asked her if the price was correct and she said that yes it was. So, I gave her $40 (all the cash I had) and loaded it in my truck.

So, what do you think?

Ray,
Great find. Nice of you to give more than she wanted, and all the cash you had. Most people would have thrown her a five spot and left and laughed all the way to the garage. I know it will just be in your way, so you can send it to Oregon, you know the pay it forward kind of thing...lol.. you never know what treasures you can find at those yard sales. Are you going to leave it as is, or do some sort of restoration on it?

I was just going to clean the dirt/old grease and rust off of it and start using it.

Thanks for all the comments. This is really the first good vise that I've owned. My current one is from Lowes and of course made over seas.

Where in San Diego do you live? My wife and i used to live in El Cajon up until almost 10 years ago, but moved here as money when she retired goes further.

We used to go to Balboa Park and hear the organ concerts on sundays, and go out to Pt Loma & watch the sun go down. I miss the beauty of San Diego, but not the crowding(I8,52,I5) on weekdays.

I agree here! I would screw up and pick up the 10th's tape and wonder why all my pieces are cut wrong :lol_hitti
What's the purpose of a 10th's tape?

I've been using engineering tapes for years. When I first picked one up I was wondering why there was only 10-inches in the foot. Now, pick up a standard tape and try to figure out how they crammed 12-tenths into each foot.

We used them at work for collision reconstruction. It made diagramming/measuring very easy. 4.5-ft was easy to write vs 4-ft 6-in. and much easier to diagram. Just takes a little getting used to.

You done good! Did she say anything when you gave her all you had, or was she dumbstruck by your generosity?

I told her that it was worth much more than she had priced it at and more than I had with me. But, when I told her that she had all the cash that I had with me, she was happy with that and thanked me.

That is one fine looking clamp. Although your honor is more impressive. It makes me wonder how much more, if any, I should have offered for the 1750 which is certainly not as nice as this one you found.
