Just picked up a Wilton 1745 that was surplus at work for $170 - used but in very good shape with a set of aluminum jaws thrown in. Decent price?

I think you can get that brand new for under $130 at Sears. It will be red and have a craftsman plate but its the same vise.

Sears quit selling them. You can get it at Harbor Freight now. I think they even have a 20% off sale going on....

LMFAO... Please do share a Wilton 1745 vise link to either Sears or Harbor Freight. I've never seen this vise at either store let alone for 20% off.

Its a chinese knock off of a wilton, good for light duty home work, maybe. The machinist vises snap on sells are wilton tradesman vises made in the usa, they are painted red and have a snap on label on instead of a wilton label. I dont know who makes the mechanics vises for snap on, the look like a chinese vise but i dont know for sure.

The Craftsman Pro vise is pretty much identical to a Wilton 1745. I measured mine against one we had at work, and the dimensions are identical. Even the mounting bolt pattern on the swivel base is the same. Both are made of 60,000psi ductile iron.

I actually own two of the Craftsman Pro vises, and have been extraordinarily happy with them. I have one at home on my workbench and one mounted to my toolbox. For the price, there's no better vise. If I had more money though, for damn sure I'd have an American made vise.

I'm just going through some older threads discussing the craftsman pro vise, and pointing out something I discovered during a full dis-assembly, clean and re-lube. Owners of this vise should be aware of the potential for "chips in the bullet". Basically, when they drill the holes for the roller pins holding the lead screw assembly, chips are deposited onto the lead screw nut and migrate into the bullet.
