Just replaced Old Working GFCI Outlets with New, Not Functioning Now

I just replaced/updated about 90% of the switches and outlets on the upper floor.

ALL WORK FINE EXCEPT the GFCI outlets.

It was kind of idiot proof except correcting a 3 way switch set-up in the bathroom to work as it should.

I wired the new GFCI outlets as the old functioning outlets were.

On the new GFCI outlets the Green little light is illuminated. I tried resetting the switch and it will not pop. Could it be possible that the package of 3 switches be defective or am I missing something.


Switch facing you. Bare ground wire in on the bottom of the light.

On the lower Left is wired to white. On the Lower Right it is wired to white.

Can you take a picture of how you have it wired from the back? You have it wired to the "line" and not the "load" set of screws right?

that sounds wrong. Should be a black and a white line in, and the other set which is usually covered by tape is the black and white line out.

Yes, back is labeled white where the white wire is and black/hot where black wire is installed

you have the wires on load, they need to be on line.

Load is for feeding other outlets. Line is input.

Looks like its wired back assward, i've done that !

BTW thats a heavy duty recp. the wire goes in straight under the clamp (loosen the screw more) IMO

If one outlet feeds others down the line, as evidenced by at least two blacks and two whites in the box than you can just use the load terminals on the GFCI to feed other non-GFCI receptacles.

As others have pointed out your current issue is tying the source power to the load side of the GFCI.

Just as a minor point, when wrapping a wire around a screw terminal, make it so as you tighten the screw, it tends to close the wire loop as opposed to opening it. In your picture, black wire is correct, white wire is not.

Best way to remember it, the word line has (in) inside of it. That's how I was taught and easy to remember

Those are spec grade backwire/clamp terminals.

U dont need to loop the wire.

Strip the wire per the gage on the back, loosen the screw and insert the wire. Tighten the screw.

I think I know what you are saying,

Instead of hooking it around the screw, straighten out the wire and insert it into small hole and tighten it down...?

Just out of curiousity, what is the benefit of that vs. the traditional way? Just preference?

YES IT DID, wife was all emotional. When I replaced everything, we assumed the GFCI was working order since the green light on the outlet was lit. I had to leave for work and she needed to do some work on her iMac. Apparently, it is really bad to run iMac off a non-GFCI outlet for few hours till I came home to rectify the situation. I told her we paid for insurance on the computer, worse case scenario we will have to use it.

Now I will spend some time making the outlets flush and even!

Side note, later in the year we will be adding Hi-Hats in each and every room which means I will have to replace the switches again with Dimmers that will comply with LED lights. Something I brought to her attention. Her response was, when you expand the garage you know have switches for it. I just looked at her with the Forest Wittaker Eye and said to myself happy wife...happy life. Re-assured her what a great idea she had.
