It was rusty and packed with old congealed grease. I put some work into restoring it and now it works perfectly.
Looks like a gem!!! What did you find was the easiest way to removed the old grease? I bought a bicycle that had been stored for many, many years in AZ's heat (in a garage). Big PITA for me to deal with the rock hard, dried out grease in the bearings.

Scooped out as much as I could, then left it overnight in dish soap water, and the next day I ran hot water through it to melt some more out, and finally I sprayed it out with high pressure water. It was actually quite a bit of work.

I found this vintage grease gun at an estate sale last week. It was rusty and packed with old congealed grease. I put some work into restoring it and now it works perfectly.

The Alemite number should be stamped into the steel body. Is it #5586?

Caterpillar supplied this gun with all their tractors D2 up for years.

Please tell us what the bung in the handle accesses.
