Just saw the some new crescent adjustable wrenches at Home Depot they look shiny but turning the back over reviles the ominous made in china label at least looking at the name on the wrench will tell you were its from the font is different and the absents of usa on the handle is a good clue

Just spotted these today myself on the adjustable wrenches with the red coated handles. The USA ones have a spongy coating and of course say USA on the handle. The new CHINA wrenches have shiny red plastic dip coated handles. Price and part # are the same for the USA/CHINA offerings.

The WF-made ones from Rigid, Craftsman, etc., are also quite nice. USA and far, far better than the Crescent USA wrenches.

personally my experience hasn't been dissatisfaction with the sloppiness of the adjustment screw but the quality of the jaws where the pressure points are............i just take it as a matter of fact that loosening and tightening is to be expectied while admiistering the jurisprudence required to wielding a compromise..............

Lovely - more stuff that's gone to China. I bought a 10" Crescent spud a couple of weeks ago that is my best friend, and now if I tear it up I'm looking at a Chinese replacement? Goody, more stuff to replace with Proto.

I never liked the modern handles of the Crescent adjustables, but I honsetly thought if they'd made it this far, to 2011, making in the USA, I never, EVER thought they'd turn to the dark side....wow.

And they of course will still charge U.S. made prices.

That's what kills me! Sitting at Lowe's the Kobalts adjustables are right underneath the Crescents so you can see the difference in price. The new Crescents are mixed up so you think that you're paying a little more for a US made wrench but if you turn it over you'll find out that you aren't.

Yeah, I saw them at Home Depot.. Not Impressed..

In addition, they were mixed in with the USA made wrenches. So, made in China. Made in USA pricing..

Sad, one more icon of the USA down. Now being made to support the economy of another communist county. I honestly never really liked the newer USA made Crecents, liked the older (pre-Cooper) ones better

Although I always prefered the adjustables from Diamond Calk, I thought the Crescent brand adjustable was a good wrench before Cooper acquired them. Never liked the thick beefy handles they started making in recent years. I also noticed that about 4 years ago they stopped stamping "Crestalloy" into the wrench. I took that to mean that a good steel alloy was becoming too cost prohibitive for Cooper to offer it's customers, meaning they no longer used that alloy.

Oh well, we still have one more quality maker of adjustbales left here in the USA......Western Forge, likely the very last domestic maker of adjustables, and they operate in my own state. They make pretty good wrenches, always liked the Craftsmans and SK versions. Now that Ideal owns them I hope they realize the value of supporting the US economy and keeping production here.

I'm with you on that, although I prefer tools made in N.A., I never liked Crescent, my preference being SO, Gray and Wright for adjustables. There is another thread on the Rigid adjustables,,

No, People Republic of China, they're comminust, red all the way through. ROC (Taiwan is different). Too bad our capitalistic companies are too willing to do business with communists.

Funny, during the cold war I could buy fur coats here that were made in Russia, now I can buy anything made in China, but damn it, I can't legally buy a Cuban cigar anywhere in the world as long as I'm an American.:mad:

Technically, as I understand the law, we as citizens of the United States, are barred from even purchasing them legally even when overseas. Though I'm not aware of anyone who's ever actually served jail time for bringing them through customs.

What a joke anyway. Back when I was young, before the trade sanction embargo, those Cuban made cigars weren't even highly sought after by most Americans. The cigars back then that everyone wanted and thought to be quality were the ones made here in Tampa, FL from Cuban leaf tobacco, that was the stuff every cigar smoker wanted. The lable with the words "Tampa" on them was the prize and status back then.

Would rather be buying Cuban made cigars and Russian made firearms rather than to buy Chinese made hand tools. I think my money is much better spent doing that.

Perhaps you don't remember what happened to one of our military aircrews in the Pacific back in early 2001.

Interesting thread.
I have a pair of cushy red 8'' crescents, where the coating was just hanging on. Cut off yesterday, found that there is no name stamping on the bodies - just some codes on the end. For fun, I cut off the coating on my 10'', made in USA, Crescent name. All are near the same vintage - 7/10 years old.
Picked up new Crescents today, black oxide finish, (1) 6'', (2ea) 8 &10''. All stamped 'USA'.

I paid $82 for the bigger Snap-On adjustable (Spain) off the truck a couple years ago....and I honestly don't regret it. Best adjustable I've ever used. Others I have are Matco, Craftsman, Crescent, and Taiwan.

My gripe with my newer made in USA Crescent is that the pin is not removable. My crew and I work in water and mud all day and its nice to be able to take it apart to clean. The new one I have the pin is just a round rod with the hole peened to keep it in place.

A good soak in WD-40 should take care of it, by soak I mean submerge.

There are more used american cresent around that they won't run out for at least 50 years. i found a realy good 18" cresent- Jamestown, NY. today. ($15.00) looks unused!

There are millions of used american made cresents out there. Help a poo fleemarket guy (me) and buy a used one. also you help save invironment, and keeps money in your community and doesn't help the china army.

I'll agree with that. :) Before I had access to internet and discovered the old world I sourced most of my used US made tools from flea markets.

Truecraft Tool Company, before they left the tool business, used to source some mighty fine wrenches from a foundry in Spain. I wonder if they're related.
