Hi, Justin, you have a wonderful deck and loft in progress! Can you explain me why the deck was done before the post were put on place? I have no experience with wooden constructions but I would like to build a deck in the near future and it would be very helpful if you or any experienced wood worker here can explain me that.
I mean why not building the deck from the gound up puttin post in the first place?
Thank you in advance and you have a very nice place with an excellent view there!

It was for the footer inspection. The county had to come out and measure the depth and make sure it was all within code before they could pour the concrete and lay in the posts.

This may not apply for everyone, but it does here in the Communistwealth of VA

I knew it was a good reason! Thank you for the information!

with the way the economy is, its looking more and more likely that I will be moving my business into the garage, fixing respiratory equipment. The loft will likely be an office. And the deck may very well be enclosed and used for storage.

So much for a man cave. Maybe some day!

So did you bring the business home?

We need photographic proof of progress!

you must REALLY love 4th gen F-bodys.... you got any pics or info on your car??

You noticed? Just a little... But only 4th gens.

I have some pics mine in my machine shop thread, I think. Nothing really pic-worthy. '97 3800 Camaro.

Been thinking about building a V6 car, but I don't want to contaminate Justintiime's thread with that.

Business can NOT be brought home due to restrictions in the subdivision, so I'm buying a piece of commercial property for the business... SO....

Building/modifying is progressing on renovating the garage for a man cave! I'm scouting out some of those propane heaters that suspend from the ceiling to heat the place in the winter.

Just happy to finally have a garage!

I have a large space on my back wall. It measures about 36" tall and runs the full 24' across the garage. I had no idea what to do with that space, until NOW.

I just purchased an entire PONTIAC dealer sign complete with arrowhead. The size? 36"x24' LOL

I picked up the sign a week ago, and its every bit as big as it looks! It filled up my one ton van easily LOL Plans are to clean it, and repaint the exterior in white. I will gut the electronics from the inside since they are useless (all the neon is broken) and paint the inside a reflective color. I will then use an LED rope light to light all the letters.

The garage is progressing nicely. I'm guessing maybe another 8 hours and it should all be done. Just have to add a few more outlets and run some more wires. Once all the wiring and upgrading is done, I plan on adding a Mr. heater propane heater...the kind that hangs from the ceiling. It should be sufficient for my needs :)

Then comes the sheetrock and insulation this winter. I'll mud/paint as I can, and hopefully finish in the spring!

For now, I have a wedding to pay for lol

Inside!

See the area above the rear windows (and where the door is to the deck now)? Its 36"x24.5' which si PERFECT for the sign! I will ultimately remove the shelf on the left, so it wont interfere with much of anything i guess haha

Just had my 75,000 BTU "Mr. Heater" propane heater installed today. $533 on Amazon, free shipping. Tucks right up on the ceiling for a real nice finish. Should have it running in a few days after inspection.

Can't really offer any advice on the venting, but I am excited to see this project progress. I HAVE to see that Pontiac sign mounted! Subscribed...

I don't want to be that guy, because I usually hate them, but the window AC unit framing looks a little sketchy for a load bearing wall. There really is no header for the stud that's been removed on the left of the unit. I was just wondering if you have every noticed that.

Now its time to introduce a new mini project I havent really mentioned. Behind my garage is a 13x14 shed. The building itself is in great shape but I knew the floor needed some repair.
I couldn't get in the building too well. Over the years, due to lack of drainage from the garage gutters, all the washoff had washed all the mud and dirt into the building doors and blocked them shut.

heres the dirt pile. Trust me, its deceiving
IMG_4478.jpg

Here are some of the monster roots we fought the WHOLE TIME
IMG_4474.jpg

All dug out!
IMG_4470.jpg

My parents had a pallet of old bricks at their house from when it was built 3 years ago. I loaded them all into my FJ Cruiser (2 trips).

2012-08-30_15-33-39_824.jpg

All unloaded in the yard, the pile looks much smaller than when I was loading them in my truck!
IMG_4471.jpg

I have a retaining wall!
IMG_4476.jpg

IMG_4477.jpg

I have some mortar to put on the top row to let it hold them on better than gravity lol

OK so, heres the problem. How bad is the floor inside?

Pretty. Bad. Poor drainage trashed the front of the floor.
IMG_4473.jpg

IMG_4472.jpg

A hole in the roof I never knew was there trashed the back of the floor.
IMG_4487.jpg

So we tore it all out
IMG_4486.jpg

IMG_4483.jpg

IMG_4481.jpg

The front of the building had sank a good 3 inches because the foundation had rotted out. So we jacked it back up. The door no longer sits on the floor!
IMG_4484.jpg

We went off to Lowes. We got a bunch of 3/4" marine plywood, pressure treated 2x6's and some pressure treated 4x4s and some concrete.

New posts were put under the building
IMG_4603.jpg

All new 2x6 foundation
IMG_4605.jpg

back half of the floor is replaced
IMG_4602.jpg

The floor is done now...pictures to come.

I have also taken the shelving that was in the garage, and moved it into the storage building.
2012-09-14_12-32-27_703.jpg

We can now use it for tools, gardening stuff, etc...while freeing up a TON of room in my garage :)

Super happy with how everything is turning out.

HERE IS THE FINISHED PRODUCT! Note the shelves in the shed, are directly from the garage.

You can see just how much dirt was dug out, and the plywood on the bottom indicates how much the front of the building had to be raised, to make it level again
2012-09-14_12-00-55_516.jpg

Here you can see the roof patch to close the hole
2012-09-14_12-01-10_988.jpg

And the replaced piece of plywood
2012-09-14_12-32-51_235.jpg

Going to get some rocks to place in front of the building to help with drainage. Any further suggestions?

Heres my heater that was recently installed. Venting will be finished on Monday. I'm hoping to have everything needed to vent it out the roof, instead of directly out of the wall.

I bought my house last February. One of the big draws was the large garage that was unfinished....a blank canvas! the week after purchase we had a local "home show" where you can go see all types of local vendors for project ideas, quotes etc. I had it in my mind I wanted a heat pump for the garage. It could be stowed in the eaves and be well hidden. The quotes I received were around $6000 total including installation...kinda high!

i went a different route. I installed a 18,500 BTU 240 volt ac unit in the far wall
IMG_4335.jpg

IMG_4333.jpg

During this summer when it was 105* outside this AC unit kept the garage around 81 degrees which isn't bad considering I have NO insulation. It made it workable inside so we could continue on the wiring.

Fast forward a couple months, and doing a bunch of research on this forum, I then installed a 75000 BTU propane Mr. Heater brand heater.

The gas line goes from my own tank at the house, is buried in about a 30 foot span to my garage, is run under the deck, and down the side of the building.

Heres the regulator
IMG_4612.jpg

Inside electrical and plumbing....will be tidied up once I do the interior finish work :)
IMG_4608.jpg

Minimum required space to the wall..keeps it nice and tidy
IMG_4609.jpg

Another view
IMG_4607.jpg

Ceiling mount. Impressed with how it turned out :)
IMG_4606.jpg

All together for the units, and installation, I'm looking at around $1100. What do you think?

well, now I'm officially married! That means I have less time to dedicate to a wedding, and more time to working on the garage!!

Wiring is ALMOST done. Maybe 1 day left to run all the wires. Then the inspection, and finish work.

Next up is going to be my liftmaster 3800 operator. Then sheetrock and insulation.

Can't wait!

I like how the deck turned out with the stairway. Looks clean and practical. I'm debating putting in a a/c unit in my garage? Not sure how often I'd use it but it would keep the humidity out. I wanna see the pontiac sign up! I would love to find a vintage mopar sign for mine. Keep up the work!!

Well, today the propane line and all the electrical work in the garage passed county inspection!

I also just received my Liftmaster 3800 operator, and bought some extras with it like

-keypad entry system
-laser parking assist
-2 keychain fobs

I will have my spring conversion parts ordered soon, and have it all installed! Next up is the insulation and sheetrock...I can't wait! :)
