So this is my first time owning my home.
I have dreamt of building my garage for decades, this house has room for a shop building behind it but I financially am not able to do that right now, so I am setting up my existing garage to work in for now.

My issues is.. I have to much ****. I have purged some and don’t want to get rid of to much because I will be expanding soon.

So I am focusing on storage right now and being creative with space usage.

I decided to start this thread after i began. So the before shots are in the process.
I started with taking down the shelves on my back wall and doing a cabinet/bench.

Here is the bench/cabinet

Was going to originally do a wood cabinet/bench but once I drew it up and priced it i realized I could do a metal bench for a little bit more. And since I am a fabricator with little wood experience I went with steel, it will have wood cabinet doors and a wood shelf.

The left side is a shelf with cabinet doors. The birch sanded finish plywood will do both, the shelf will be cut and sitting flush with the border using 1" angle steel supporting the wood. The crossbar for that shelf was also installed 3/4" back to allow the cabinet doors to sit flush. Another reason I did this the way I did is in the event I had to spray anything down or wanted to sweep out the bottom of the cabinet, I don't have the raised bottom shelf to worry about.

The bench is generally light duty, sub for wood. So its all 11ga 2x2 with the exception of the bench top front beam which I did out of 3/16" to take on any extra weight but also to match the edge better of the table top.

Also notice the counter top is out 2 inches, one this is so you aren't banging your knees as much when standing at that portion of the bench, but also so you have a little lip to clamp down with.

Top is 3/16" CR Steel that I had a local supplier press break in a back splash and front lip

I treated is with Gibbs, here was a test area, the first picture its all on there thick, I normally put it on let it soak in, then wipe it down with a red rag.

Borrowed this amazing magnet, the table top was roughly 220 lb and instead of inviting a bunch of buddies over and entertaining I went the antisocial route. This Magnet lifts 600kg which is roughly 1300lb. It worked great, almost to good because at one point while hoisting it onto the table i had it to close to the frame and it grabbed it.

I then radiused the end pieces to allow it to weld flush. Also made sure my ends were all tucked behind something, so no open tubing ends anywhere.

Well, nice bench you're building there. 1 1/2 or 2" square tubing? Ought to be pretty strong.

Thanks Billy, it is 2" tubing mostly .120 wall

That's a nice workbench. How did you get the magnet off the work surface when you were done with it? Is it an electromagnet or a permanent magnet?

Thanks it’s a lift magnet so it uses a lever to move things internally to operate the magnet, it’s not electric, thats about all I know.. it’s a little box of mystery

So I wrapped up this shelf today, slowly picking away at things.

I have very little experience with wood, I cut my doors for the left side but not very happy with it, got this shelf cut and stained it. Really need to take a carpentry class
