Kayak attic storage

Hey guys,

I have a fairly small two car garage that I'm working on finishing, dimensions are about 18' wide, probably 20-25' long, and only an 8ft. ceiling. I'm trying to figure out a good way to store my kayaks up and out of the way. Currently, they are hanging on one wall which isn't bad, but does get in the way when I'm trying to work on my project car in one of the bays. Given that the ceilings are only 8ft, I can't hang them from the ceiling above the garage door, and I don't really want to hang them anywhere else simply because it will feel like it's bringing the roof down on my head :). I do have attic space above the garage. Up above the garage is a web truss (single story house) with 24" on center spacing. Sooo.... here are some wild and crazy possibilities I can think of:

1. Cut a space in the ceiling drywall between two trusses and long enough for the kayak. Frame in a little box above the openining, fill in the walls of the box with new drywall and use a pulley system to get the kayaks up into that. Pros: Gets the kayaks up into the attic 'area' while still having access to them from the garage. Cons: Lots of work, lose that attic storage space.

2. Cut a space in the ceiling drywall and rig up some kind of spring loaded trap door, then use a use pulley system to raise and lower the kayaks through the trap door. Pros: Potentially a little less work than option 1. Cons: Still a lot of work, not sure how to do the trap door.

3. Leave them on the wall. Pros: No work. Cons: I hate having the yaks eating up garage space :).

Any other ideas? I've also been trying to think of places to put them in the backyard, but nothing I haven't thought of has really appealed to me (putting them in the shed, putting them on a sideyard on sawhorses, etc...). I really like having easy access to them from the garage, I just would like them up and out of the way.

I built an 11'x18' storage shed last summer. Part of my plan was to alleviate a similar problem. I built open trusses, then framed a "hayloft" style door in the gable end of the attic area. This allows me to store my two 17 ft. canoes up there. You might be able to make a similar access, assuming its a gable and not hip roof, and assuming your existing trusses have enough space between the webs.

my first thought was you #1
not sure it would be as much work as you think and #2 is more work than you think

I'm in the same boat as you. No pun intended. :) We have 2 sea kayaks, 17' and 16.5' long. And we have a 2 car garage which is 19'x21'x8'4". We don't have attic space above so our best solution was mounting to the wall on the side where my fiance parks. That way I have the other bay to work in.

I used 2 sets of these. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...parentType=index&indexId=cat603344&hasJS=true
They hold the yaks tight to the wall and are very strong. Good luck!

I don't know if anyone cares, but I ended up going with my #1. Here's a pic of the almost finished project. Still need to get the pullies up in it followed by the kayaks.

My dad retro-fitted his garage in the same way for canoe storage.

Please post pics with the pulley system installed and the kayaks in place. Thanks

Nice job on the ceiling work. Looks like a great idea.

I just done the exact same thing for a neighbor last week, and for kyaks too. I welded up some tubing for a frame and it tucks up nicely.

Someone asked for pics of the pulley system. Here's a couple of pics. First is the kayaks up in the hole, the second is a better picture of the pulley system. I got the pulley setup from Cabelas. The box said it was designed for kayaks, though it looks exactly like a bike pulley system I used to have :).

That looks great. So those are just some of the off the shelf pullys...? They look just like the ones I use for our bikes. Such a simple idea that I'm sure took a lot of work. Definitely looks like it was worth the effort to keep them tucked up into the ceiling rather than hanging down into the room.

Only you know just how much work went into that project and I am sure it was a lot more than any of us imagine. Real nice job.

Yup, off the shelf pullies. Like I said, they also look like some bike pullies I used to have too :).

I know this is an old post, but I just ran into it and wanted to say that this is a brilliant idea and looks awesome. I'll have to remember this idea.
