Seems like I'm always looking for a place to put pics and a the smaller stuff isn't really solo thread worthy for one or two pics. Figured I would just start a thread and put all my stuff in here. I've been tagging on to the cnc table build, but it seems like some stuff involves the plasma and some doesn't. Easier just to keep it all here.

Today's projects.

Finished up the little shelf thing I've been working on. I cut the brackets on the plasma, folded on the mag brake, dimpled with the 1.5" die I made and painted with some leftover black textured paint. I like the raw look better, but easier to just paint this set for now. The shelf is red oak, roughly 5.5"x20". Just cleaned up with a 1/16" roundover, sanded and stained with some random stain I got from my dad. I think it's mahogany. Cleared with laquer.

Buddy hit me up about making an infeed material stand for his cold saw. Got carried away and drew a stool instead of the material stand, although it won't be hard to build either. Just basically need a spanner handle and a smaller pad to make a material stand. All drawing done in Fusion360 and dxfs grabbed directly from there and imported to Sheetcam for tool paths and then Mach3 to cut on the plasma. Leg shape should be multipurpose, so I cut some out. 1/4" HRS plate. Powermax 85 goes through it like butter. 45A nozzle just out of curiosity. I think it was 45 ipm, basically book specs. Could cut way faster with 65 or 85A setup. Pretty damn good edge. I'm happy with this, pics are literally right off of the table, zero cleanup. Need more material, only got two out of what I had :bounce:.

Thanks guys. Sometimes it seems hard to make time with a family and a full time job, but it's relaxing being out in the garage.

Out in the garage with some free time today. Took the wife to the airport this morning. She'll be gone for a week and the kid was at my inlaws.

Trying some different things to help control the smoke. Even though I have a water table, it doesn't collect everything. This seemed to work pretty well. Strong enough to pull air across the table while cutting, plus helped just move some air in the garage.

https://scontent-dfw1-1.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/11924575_10153564663409168_5440116740678539504_n.jpg?oh=ff9fe2848d83442fb3f21eb43a1175c7&oe=563FC21D

Damn water in the table has been evaporating in the table so fast, it's almost gone in a week. I've been lazy and running dry lately. Hence the fan. I did put some water back in to help control the smoke. I've had a Reelcraft air hose reel I've had sitting around and never seem to get to it. Busted out a quick bracket out of some spare 1/4" today. Managed to run out of Argon on the first weld, after getting the tacks down. I think the pressure would build enough to cover for the tacks and but once flowing, it blew out on me. Had to dust off the mig and bust it out. Should have preheated, my Millermatic 180 was running balls out and didn't quite have enough umph to wet out how I would have liked. Oh well. One of these days, I'll buy a new 252. I keep thinking about selling the 180 because I never seem use it and prefer my Sync 250, but then occasionally I need it for something. It's also way easier to move and weld things in the driveway.

Some artsy stuff for a buddy. Crappy file, not sure where he got it.

https://scontent-dfw1-1.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/11880553_10153564637734168_3425148336737965131_n.jpg?oh=f7753fdc347a171295f04669a787b07d&oe=567741D1

My own artsy stuff meant for a wall mount. I drew this file a while ago in 24" square and cut it with my old setup. Sold the only one I cut to a random dude I sold some tools to that just like it and wanted it. I originally wanted to cut it larger, so I did today. 46" square, to fit on a half sheet of 14g. Might powder coat it white. Need to whip up some mounting for it tomorrow. Just tried to work my way though some excess material I had sitting around today. Should have the argon filled tomorrow morning and will hopefully be able to make some progress on the stool.

Managed to get some stuff done today, but not as much as I wanted. Got my argon filled...$64 for a 330 bottle, not too bad. Didn't have much time to tig though since I have my kid solo while the wife is gone. Knocked out some stuff while he was napping. I made a Ti ring for my soon to be brother-in-law, that I forgot to take a pic of.

Make a couple little tabs to hang the retro art piece I made yesterday. 1/4" slots. Need to change the lead in a little on the slots.

Had a random thought about a way to organize my straps on the way to get my bottle filled, since they were all over the back of my truck. It drives me crazy, but folding them only seems to help for so long. Came up with a better solution I think.

i'm curious as to why you leave such big gaps between parts? seems like a waste of material unless there is a specific need to do that.

That's definitely true. The Ti is for a buddy for knife parts. He is going to saw them into smaller pieces and then machine them.

I can definitely say that having the CNC plasma has influenced the way I think about projects. I'm sure that most likely applies to most tools. You find a need and then that branches out into creative ways of using something. CNC is seriously like crack. It's addicting. Things that would have taken me hours to build before now take minutes. Plus I can call up a saved file down the road and build an exact replica 6 months or 5 years from now. I know machines like this are integral for shops, but I wholeheartedly feel it helps me enjoy my garage more. It allows me to make much more use of my time. I can draw files, cut parts and build something in a fraction of the time. Repeatability and accuracy are nice too :)

I actually flipped the plate and cut the same parts in reverse in the gaps. That was just the in between pic since the plate was ridiculously hot after those parts were cut and I waited for them to cool down.

Gettin tiggy with it today on the Sync 250. Finally getting the stool welded up. Just needs the seat finished. The hard part is done.

Going to build a jig for making all sorts of stands, both 3 and 4 legged. Drew it up in Fusion360 the other night. My buddy that I did the Ti for runs a CNC mill, so he's going to help me program the file and run it in his mill. Gets me more excited to work towards buying a VMC.

Slabbing off big plate in the big Johnson, horizontal band saw. The plate is 1.5" thick and a little over 11" across. Not too shabby. Cut was almost dead nuts square.

More stool shenanigans. It was just going to be a round walnut seat, but that quickly went out the window. I tend to make things more complicated the longer the idea brews. Oh well.

Tigged the hub to the main screw from the inside and then machined it flat.

Don't tell the wife I'm doing edge glue ups in the living room while watching the kid. Uncharted territory for me. The glue up, not the doing stuff in the living room I'm not supposed to.

Mocked up, still need to bandsaw out the seat and finish the wood. Probably go to the old man's house since he's the woodworker.

This is very interesting. Subscribing.

I have a Platform, currently with a router but plasma is just so tempting!

Hey Kaz, are you and your buddy using Fusion for everything? Tool paths, post processor, etc? Or does he convert to different cam software after you draw it?

When I glue up boards like that, I scrape the excess glue off before it fully cures, get it when it just skins over. Not a big deal but it comes right off and is easier than trying to sand it out later. Also will not show when you stain or finish it. I keep an old hand plane blade nearby and use it as a scraper.

I just use Fusion for drawing. I still need to use Sheetcam for tool paths for cutting in the plasma. My buddy that runs a CNC mill has started using Fusion for everything, design and CAM. I think he was using Surfcam previously.

Got my lathe a present today since they were on sale. Tired of going back and forth to my regular box for my tooling and dropping stuff off the lathe, when I really shouldn't be storing **** on top of it anyway.

That's cool. I keep telling myself to learn the fusion but I just keep coming up with excuses. I'm pretty slow with computers, so its not easy for me to learn. I have a prototrak and use Mastercam 9 to draw and for tool paths but only 2 axis stuff. Fusion looks really cool with all the features, hopefully someday I'll get the hang of it.

In all honesty, it's not that hard to do the basics. The tools are really simple. There are a ton of tutorials on youtube.

This one's really good to start. It's basics of sketching. You start with sketches usually and then pull into 3D. For a lot of the plasma stuff, I will just create a sketch and then export the sketch to a dxf and never even use 3D stuff.

Since the HF tool cart is going to be dedicated to the lathe, decided to start with an MT4 tool holder. The tools are starting to pile up and I like leaving them setup for general stuff that I use all the time. Basically, I keep a center drill, smaller drill and some other stuff loaded up. Plus I have some MT4 twist drills that I use to open up big holes to go straight to boring bars. I also plan on drilling the rivets out and taking off the flip top. Then, I'm going to design a rack to bolt to the rear bolts that will most likely hold the tool post tools.

Also, super stoked. Managed to score an 8x10' Rubbermaid shed for $25 today. Took it apart, drug it home, washed it and put it together. The roof panels are a little faded and slightly warped, but I'll manage. I've been wanting to get some misc stuff out of the garage for a while. So stoked.

Thanks for the video link, I watched it. I think Ill start doing 2d stuff until I get familiar the move on to the modeling.

What brand lathe do you have? Tailstock looks like a Clausing.

Does the water in you plasma smell?

The lathe is a 1440 Cadillac. It's a beast. I had an 11" Logan previously and there's no comparison. No, the water table doesn't smell...or at least that I can tell. My wife says the whole garage smells, so not sure...
