Touched up the slots. Split the fatter block in two. I'll slot the two smaller blocks and then drill and tap everything.

The tool holder seems odd?

Why not make them like the Aloris style, so the tool is held closer to the post so its more rigid?

The post is short and stubby. There are other smaller holders, but I just copied the one I liked.

Wow!!! Great deal if they aren't clapped out. Just one question, where are you going to put the cincinnati? ;)

Might get punked on the mill :(. Apparently there was a higher bid in the fax machine that was stamped before the cutoff. Guy didn't see it until after he told me. I'm second in line though if he falls through. My buddy was going to buy my surface grinder. I would put it there.

Finished up the tool holders. Might grind the faces real quick.

I know. It *****, but at the same time I have to respect the guy's integrity. If someone legitimately got a bid in then he deserves to get it even though the guy had told me I was the high bid.

Thanks on the holders. I'm pretty stoked with how they came out. I think when I make another batch, I'll use smaller material. This was 3x4" by 8" bar. I will probably pick up a 2x3" bar tomorrow when I hit my supplier.

My buddy did get the Monarch though. We went and scoped it today. Pretty solid deal for $2400. 3 and 4 jaw chucks, taper attachment, collet closer with OG Monarch D1-3 5C nose cone. Original manuals, wiring diagrams, blueprints, etc, in a folder. Should clean up pretty well. All the wheels feel tight. It's quite a bit smaller in person than I thought it would be. Never seen one in person up until today. Should be fun to run. I think he's going to end up selling his South Bend.

Integrity is very important, I just found fax bidding amusing. Hope it works out for you!
I think there was a monarch for sale locally a while back, seems like it was right around that price too but did not include anything, just the lathe. I'm not real familiar with them but if your buddy is selling his Southbend, the Monarch must be a pretty nice machine. I know Southbends are highly regarded machines.

I didn't think you were :). They ended up a little little further out from the post than they need to be. It's more from getting the material to match the design on the one I had then decided not to bevel cut it and cut the slot for tools on the front instead. When I make another batch, I'll change up the dimensions a little to make them more compact.

Yea, a 10EE is a pretty nice machine. :spit: More machine than what ~95% of home shops NEED. It's a true tool room lathe. Soundbends are very light industrial machines, especially the older ones. They just don't have the ridgidity.

He has a SB 16 right now. Good machine but basic. Just like everyone else...looking for more power, more rpm and all the other luxuries on a lathe. He'll put it to good use. He does good work. The rpm will be good for small stuff and aluminum.

Who doesn't need a titanium mini cannon? Barrel is 1.5" 6/4 ti, frame is 3/8" 304 SS.

Be careful shooting ball bearings out of your cannon. I made one years ago that shot 1" ball bearings. The barrel was about 12" long with a 1.002" bore. I also made a little stand for it. It could shoot the ball through a 15"-18" diameter cedar tree. The whole piece would flip violently with just the same amount of pyrodex that I would put in my muzzle loader. I ended up turning nylon bullets, as they would only go about 100 yards.

Yea, I kept the bore size down on purpose. The whole thing is pretty hefty. I've shot it already and it barely moves.

Picked up a vacuum pump the other day. It's pretty good size. Paid $30 for it at a college. I think it still runs but the switch on the motor might be busted. The vacuum pump portion of it definitely still works though and you can still get parts. The same model still sells new for ~5-6k, so I'm pretty stoked. I have been looking for one to degas polyurethane for a project I'm planning and the cheap ones don't seem to pull enough vacuum. This thing seems crazy strong. I put my hand over the inlet and just turning it a half turn will **** your hand tightly against it. 1-3/4" inlet tube. Can't imagine once it's running at 400rpm like the spec says...

Cut up 36' of 2.5x0.5" aluminum flat bar today for the wallet project I've been working on. Should be filming for the Kickstarter vid and running a small batch of like 25 to test some finishing and other stuff on this coming week. I can't wait. A friend will be running them on his CNC mill for me, which if he upgrades, may hopefully be MY CNC mill if I can swing it.

Got some time to work on the belt grinder a little more. Basically got the main frame plates all drilled and tapped. Still deciding on which type of cap screws I want to use. Actual countersunk screws or a regular allen head. The plates are 3/4" thick, so should be able to flush a regular cap screw. Countersunk would go quicker though, since I could just set the depth on the drill press and go to town.

CNC stuff for the wallets. My buddy has a 2006ish Fadal. I'm really trying to learn how all this works. It's been a great experience to draw the file and see how the actual machining goes down on a CNC setup. So addicting.

One of my friends is going out of his way to do a video for me for the KS campaign. It's always crazy how you make the most mundane things look interesting with the right shots and lighting.

I have a couple days off next week, so I'm hoping to get some more done on the belt grinder.

Fadals are great machines to learn on. Super easy and forgiving.

I just passed on buying one, now I regret it.

Why not shell the top and bottom, looks better and is faster than all the passes with a smaller cutter. Unless he's saving tool change time by doing it all with one tool?

Pretty cool.

Probably buy some tooling with money from Kickstarter if it goes well. Right now he's doing it with stuff he's already got. As it is, the ops are about 5 min each, so about 10 min per part. He's roughing with a larger EM and coming back to radius the corners and do the finish pass on the inside floor with a .125 EM. It really is fascinating and I'm learning a ton. He's been using Fusion360 for programming everything, so that already helps that I can design in that and share my files with him as well as learn the CAM side of it at the same time. He does quite a bit of knife and firearms type work and is always impressing me with what he churns out.

Have you thought about a jeweling finish on one of those wallets? I bet that would be wild, especially anodized. Just a thought.

 That got me going good.

A little garage zen last night. Small lanyard bead out of 6/4 Ti. 1/4" through hole, about .600 diameter, little over an 1" long. Counterbored on one end with a 3/32" end mill. Just experimenting and trying to dial in my tools for ti. It can cut really easily or it can literally destroy an insert or tool in about 1/10 of a second. So sweet when it looks good though...
