This is my first post to this board and it looks like a valuable source of information!

Anyways...I have been looking around for a decent (medium quality) wrench set. I like the Craftsman Pro as they seem like pretty good quality for the money. I definitely want a long pattern with polished finish (I got used to my father's Snap-on tools).

I came across a set of KD wrenches for a good price and was wondering what everyone thought about these. I believe KD is made by Danaher so I am assuming that they would be the same thing as the Cman Pro...? Are they US made...? How do they handle warranties...?

I searched the forum but did not find any discussion about KD wrenches.

Thanks for any help!

You're not going to get the long pattern with the KD wrench; the Craftsman Pros are a longer pattern. Have you looked at Armstrong? They're a long pattern to begin with and they're also available in an extra long.

Beware: many tool sellers are selling the new Imported Gearwrench non-ratcheting combination wrenches and only listing the K-D name and part #.

These may actually be decent quality tools but do not be deceived into thinking that you will be getting the made in USA K-D wrenches.

If you don't mind spending a hundred bucks on a wrench set made in the far east you could give them a try. I would look or a good deal on a set of S-K long pattern wrenches or get the Craftsman pro.

Roger that. For the $$$$ and the headaches, Craftsman Pro is you best bet. just go buy them and be happy.

Thanks everyone!

I was looking at the 24 piece set as tooltopia has them for around $100. I was thinking this was a good price if they were US made.

I will keep looking around. I like the SK wrenches so I will probably try to find a decent price on them...any suggestions?

The SK's have sharp corners along the beam that hurt; the Armstrongs are a lot more comfortable and LONGER.

Stay away from Fastenal; there's been some guys on the board here that have had problems with them. Do you have any other industrial supply stores in your area?

Thanks for the links...I was actually watching three of those already.

I have been watching/bidding on tool auctions for awhile but they always go high enough that they aren't really that great of a deal.

example: watch the c-man auction...you can buy a 9 pc. set new for $60. Therefore I wouldn't want to pay anymore than 30-40 shipped on eBay for used tools...

No, I appreciate it... toolsource.com has them for $160, and I hadn't checked tooltopia - that's a great price.
I paid $140 for them shipped to me - just got them - and they look so nice I'm thinking of getting a bigger set. If I can't get even money back out of them I'll just keep them and add on to the set.

XJ1100,

I've held the Armstrong wrenches in my hand and they are very nice; would you like me to find an online source for you?

You can always order just one wrench to try out, but it's kind of a waste of shipping costs.

What sizes were you looking for?

I find the S-K's quite comfortable in my hands although the newer MAC Knuckle Saver wrenches feel sharp as a knife to me. If you want the "LONGER" Armstrongs make sure you look for their Extra long series. I believe what Armstrong refers to as long pattern is actually a bit shorter than the Long pattern S-K wrenches. Armstrong wrench sizes are like Starbucks coffee- no regular medium size. (unless you get the USA made K-D combination wrenches)

I have a set of Cornwell polished metric combination wrenches CW-10 - CW-19 that have perhaps the nicest feel to my hand. They thicker and wider in all dimensions than the SK made wrenches in the smaller sizes though. I have found the open end too thick for some things and that I can get a few extra turning degrees from the box end of the S-K. This difference slowly diminishes as the wrench size increases but is very apparent in the 10 mm which is used a lot. Most of the time this really does not matter. I own a lot of wrenches and I tend to use the brand that is closest to the fastener I am attacking.

I am looking for both SAE and Metric...10-19mm and 3/8-1" or something similar. I am not too picky and will fill in where I need with individuals.

Anybody have any experience with the Allen brand combo wrenches...they are Danaher and full polished, but not long pattern. Are they similar quality to the c-man pro? I found the 18 piece set at Menards pretty cheap.

Personally, if your not in a hurry, the Craftsman Pros go on sale under $130 for the SAE and Metric set. I have no complaints about mine...

As much as everyone likes other brands, Craftsman is a hard bargain to beat most of the time...

Thanks for the offer...I would love a set like that but I am just too cheap. I am not in a huge hurry to buy so I will be patient and hopefully something will come along on eBay for the right price.

I am not trying to be a jerk but...

Having the part numbers makes it easy to compare prices on stuff. What always gets me in trouble is trying to find the best deal on something without model numbers.

I have a set of metric KD wrenches. I can't say much about them b/c I have never used them. At least I know they are there. I have a set (3/8-3/4) of Armstrong wrenches and I like them a lot. Bought them on E-bay pretty cheap, same with the KD wrenches.
