Keeping Compressor Outside?

So just built a 40 x 55 steel building and one thing that always bugged me about my old shop was the loud compressor running.

So I was thinking about building an insulated shed outside the shop to house the compressor. I would have it on a switch and have the regulator, filter, and dryer inside the shop.

Who has done this? What worked/didnt work? Any other suggestions.

I live in CA and don't have any neighbors it would affect.

Thanks!

does it freeze where you live?

if it does you gotta make sure it is drained and the water doesn't expand and blow the tank.

Freezing is very rare. Plus it will be in an insulated shed.

I just did this with mine, best thing I ever did. It makes the shop nice and quiet, and freed up some floor space. I made a large closet in a shed that if on the side of the shop and insulated it, going to put a light bulb in there for heat, its a lot easier to keep the small shed heated as opposed to a 1000 sqft garage.

Thanks Sam! Pretty sure that's what I'm going to do.

if it does you gotta make sure it is drained and the water doesn't expand and blow the tank.

A small puddle of water sitting on the bottom will not blow up a tank, water does not expand nearly enough to raise pressure to catastrophic levels unless the tank is filled to the brim with water.

Many older comps had a drop tube to drain water and they were able to tolerate freezing off. The small piping in bottom of the tank type drains could be an issue. But freezing isn't good for any of it.

Yea. Freezing will not be an issue. More worried about drilling 2 more holes in my shop.... Thanks for the insight!

The main compressor for the dealership is outside with the only thing keeping it out of the elements is an awning. Been that way 9 years with no issue. Our old location was the same and was like that well over a decade .
