What is the best product to ensure patched concrete stays bonded and does not lift in the future? My garage floor dates back to the 1950's and has areas that are spalling badly with Chicago winters and road salt.
I intend to repaint the concrete next spring/summer, but want to make sure the surface is prepared to accept whatever top coat I choose and will not lift. I'm not worried about the epoxy lifting, more so the concrete itself breaking up and taking the epoxy with it.
I'll try to get some pictures to show what I mean.
It is currently painted using Rustoleum's Professional series found in big box retail stores. I did this back in 2011. My garage floor was bare concrete prior to installation. Prior to etching the surface and coating with the epoxy, I had used some Quikrete concrete patch to smooth over some of the worst areas of spalling. The divots for the most part I left alone and I didn't care (at the time) for a smooth museum quality finish. There is flake added, but no clear coat.
Over the years there are areas where the concrete and epoxy have simply broken away and left the ground exposed. I will be grinding down the old epoxy and starting over. Just not sure what to use to make the original garage concrete a solid surface with peace of mind that it will last this time.
