For as long as my wife has known me (and well before she came into my life) I have had a working garage or shop.

At one point this included our two car garage at home and my 3000sq ft industrial Metal fabrication shop. Since day one I told her that I will always have a garage and/or shop where I will spend a lot of time working on projects, which may also include spending time racing or using those projects that I work on.

She has never made me feel guilty or held that against me...which is one of the many reasons I married her. She enjoys off-roading as much as I do and occasionally finds her way into the shop to help me out...whether it be lending a hand or making me lunch.

In '07 we purchased our current home and I moved out of my Fab shop and into the two garages we have here. She was more than willing to make some compromises on the size and condition of our house based solely on the fact that it fit my needs with garage space and was in a good neighborhood. She was actually excited that I would now be only feet from our back door working on projects and not miles away.

Four years later I am finally in a position to start making improvements to the house. I had originally made plans to start making some changes to my main shop that I posted HERE.

...but after thinking about it, my wife deserves something for her. She works in East LA and, including her commute, is gone for 13 hours a day 5 days a week at work. She comes home to still do most of the shopping, cleaning, laundry, and is training for a half marathon at the end of this year (Hey, at least I do the cooking!!).

Along with my 26'x27' detached garage from my other thread, I have a 17' x 27' Attached garage. It houses the washer/dryer, and water heater along with my 9x49 Bridgeport and 10x36 Rockwell Lathe and some other miscellaneous tools.

I usually find my wife piling Laundry on our bed, dressers, counters, dining room table,etc....struggling to fold it or being too worn out to fold all of it at the end of a long day. She needs a dedicated space to do laundry, fold it, store linens, and potentially do some crafts that she's always wanting to do.

Our attached garage has a vaulted ceiling for most of it but the area in which the washer/dryer and water heater sit are under a drywalled ceiling where the gable of the garage roof meets the main house. This area was just screaming to be walled off and made into a dedicated laundry area. This will make for a 7' x 17' laundry room.

I started this project Memorial Day Weekend and have been working at least one full day, if not the two, each weekend since. I am not a carpenter, contractor, plumber, or any of the like. I am a metal fabricator by trade but I enjoy working with my hands and having the satisfaction of building things myself.

I apologize in advance for the crappy cell phone pics.

Thanks guys.

I've actually enjoyed building this as a nice change of pace from throwing sparks.

...and the wife is very happy with it. :pimpflash

she could use a bump to some front loaders with pedestals, to alleviate the need to do multiple loads. def could use a tv in there. nice work on the overhaul.

Excellent job and outlook!

My first thought was darn-inconvenient water heater. But it looks like you compensated nicely if that's a place under the counter to put a rolling laundry cart.

To fold our laundry, I open a card table in our den—with its 42" plasma. ;)

Looking good! Those are defiantly going to be double bonus points for you, with the boss.
I almost fell off my chair when you mentioned your wife piles clothing all over the house and can't cope! Just like here!:lol_hitti
So true, if she had a place to do this work or leave it till later it wouldn't be an issue.Just with my dirty shop clothes plus the two teenagers it's nonstop washing.

Looks very nice. Please be careful you don't spoil her. :lol_hitti Now that the laundry room is enclosed with the gas water heater be sure to include a carbon monoxide detector in the laundry room.

Wow! nice Job! Like the colors too and would not put a TV in there. I would install a vent above the door for the gas water heater. They have specific ventilation requirements for combustion air. Perhaps one of our plumbers will chime in.

Does she get a flat screen TV in there?

If she wants one!!

That's something she actually doesn't want!! I told her I would buy them for her when we moved in but she doesn't want them. It's only me and her so we don't generate a ton of laundry and our current setup is only a few years old anyways..I scored the pair off craigslist for $500 and they had only been used once.

Thanks. She either turns the TV on in the bedroom or listens to her IPOD right now...I'll have to see what she wants once it's all done.

Nice build man. Good thinking... A happy wife >= priceless.

That's for sure!

LOL...no kids for us yet. I'm 32 but still feel like I'm too young (mentally) to have kids.

I have thought about that and will probably add one of the smoke detectors that is tied to our monitored alarm system as well as a CM detector.

Your effort is inspiring.
Great work.
Every time you go out there you will have a huge grin on your face.

Thanks!!

Thanks!

I have already planned on the venting. The enclosure is made much bigger than the requirements of the WH and the small space above the door will be cut out for the vent.

This project cracks me up. You know you could have also just helped out more with the laundry and cleaning duties, right? :bounce:

But, I like the build. Good work so far.
