Two things that burn my azz is, 1) Sub loaning them, they ain't yours you have no right to loan them out. 2) Modifying tools, see above.

Edit: 3 things, 3) Not bringing them back.....

I don't loan out any tools that I care about. Learned that lesson the hard way a long time ago when I was turning wrenches for a living. Nothing worse that not having the one tool that you need to do a job, because you loaned it out to somebody.

I only loan out tools I don't use very often..I write it down on a paper hanging on a clip board in everyones view..with the date..Sometimes when they see the list it reminds them they need to return a tool..If I have to replace the tool (after giving them plenty of time to return it)I send them a bill with the date they borrowed it, telling them to keep the borrowed tool and pay the bill..Sounds like I'm being an *** but they don't ask again..Problem solved.

Like many others have said,I only lend to/borrow from a very few guys...mostly at work,so I see them every day. I won't lend to people outside my work place any more...I let the guy next door to me use a 3/8 ratchet and deep socket to fix something on his motorcyle...never got it back.
I work at a college and a summer camp. Some of the students work maintenance, and none of them have any tools. When a kid asks me for something (usualy simple stuff:hammer ,screwdriver, etc.)I will not put it in his hand until he gives me some collateral. I have held everything you can imagine...cell phones,wallets,ipods,...anything that is valuable to the kid....that stuff always comes back.

I have two friends that I would let use anything that I own and they are the same way toward me. Everybody needs at least one friend like that.

Outside of that...nobody borrows my tools.

I lend tools to 3 people. My dad, my brother, and my best friend. My brother is the only one who will sometimes miss treat something but I just beat him.:bounce:.
In all honestly, like others have said in other words. Get your own if you need it. That's how I built my collection.

Tools don't want to be loaned. With your own tool you know how weak or strong it is. With a borrowed one you don't really know. I' ve loaned tools myself a few times, it breaks and then I've had to buy a something expensive to replace, for example, a basically worn out Black & Decker sander. Same thing if you loan out, my own lawn mover goes and goes for years. Neighbour borrows it, and chop, drive shaft gone.

other than my son, who is more **** about my tools than I am, nothing gets lent out, I do a "bring it here and I'll help you fix it" rule, or I bring the tool and help them at their place. When I made a living with my tools, it was critical that everyone of them were available when I needed them, and that is the reason that my son feels the same way, he grew up around the need, and now makes a living with his tools. I really don't mind helping friends, because often they do not have a clue about what they are trying to do, so it creates one of those teaching moments, that I enjoy. PLUS then they owe me one!
