So I am an idiot and made a table top to put on a keg and mounted brackets onto the wood top and when trying to attach to the keg I can’t get a damn pilot hole started. Can I use a flux core welder and just weld the metal brackets right to the keg?

If someone has an easier way to get a pilot hole started that would also help.

First question, have you depressurized the keg?

Not a huge deal, just a shot in the face and a stinky room. But easy enough to avoid. (just depress the plunger ball w/ rag over it)

Kegs are SS, and will require a decent bit. I suggest using a punch to start, then a new quality bit. Shouldnt have a issue once youve pierced it. Step bit to do larger diameters.
Also, which part of the keg are you trying to drill? Handles are multi layer rolled, and tough, the top and bottom are heavier gauge to IIRC.

To answer your question, yes you can weld carbon steel (likely your brackets) to SS, but it will corrode and may not look great.

What about brackets that clip into the handle, L shaped?

Hook to handle, then drill up into the wood from underneath.
