So, I was really excited when I came across an old Kellogg American 331TV compressor pump I found on E-bay,I'm a Heavy duty equipment mechanic by trade and I remember working in a shop years ago that had a 331tv supplying the shop air,I had been really impressed by the build quality and especially how extremely quiet it ran situated in the corner of the shop.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago I went ahead and purchased this pump sight unseen and after finally getting a hold of the seller to arrange for pick up I got a chance to ask what condition the pump was in, the seller said the pump made a ticking sound upon staring then went a way. he said he thought it was the centrifugal unloader that might need attention.Upon arriving for pick up I got the chance to hear it while starting and sure enough it made a noise while starting but it turned out to be more of a rod knock than a ticking sound, the seller insisted it was just the unloader making the noise .
I got the the compressor home, took it it apart , found the high pressure connecting rod bearing completely gone, crank shaft badly scoured and the connecting rod big end damaged.
New crank shaft is approx. 270.00 rod 90.00 gasket set 50.00 plus over 50.00 in shipping.
Should I count this as a loss and find a used Quincy QR-325? after the fact, I found from the forums that the quincy is pretty well regarded.
The differences I,ve found are the 331 has more displacement 4 3/4x 21/2 x 4" stroke and runs slower@ 350-668 rpm and is splash lubricated while the Quincy 325 is 4 1/2 x 2 1/2x 3" stroke runs faster @ 400 to 900 rpm and is pressure lubricated.

I am partial to the pressure lubricated units, but I also own a Quincy, so I may be biased. If it helps, I also owned a similar Kellogg unit, but traded it to a friend. They both make different sounds, the Quincy sounded "lower" and it was better on my ears. I don't think the RPMs will make much of a difference in the end.

I used to have a 331 kellogg, you could stand 2 ft from it and carry a conversation with someone speaking in a normal voice, unfortunitly mine had a similar meltdown I could not find parts.I then found a champion swapped the 3 phase motor with the single phase from the kellogg the pulley for the kellogg was 1/2 the diameter as the champion which equals twice the pump speed and twice the noise.I sure miss that old kellogg.

I would probably have to go with the Quincy too mainly because of the availability of all the parts. Allot of parts will also interchange between many of their models too. Like for instance my single stage 230 has the same crankshaft as the 325 two stage and the Quincy running at lower rpms are not all that much louder than the Kellogg. My dad has a Kellogg running at 500 rpm and my Quincy runs at 900 and they sound about the same noise wise

Seems with that level of damage, you could have seen a ton of metal in the oil if it was run and the oil stirred up??
Pretty crappy of the seller.......did you take it back and get a refund?
The 325 is a no-brainer compressor to have. But be sure to check out any used ones thoroughly before purchase.

If you can get parts personally I would fix it, but around me used compressors seem to go for 3/4 new price.
