Kellogg 452 worth a full rebuild?

Maybe re phrase this slightly, is there any reason NOT to rebuild one of these pumps? As far as I can tell they seem like a solid, low rpm pump. Just wondering of there is some reason to avoid it. Like lack of parts etc.?

Unless there are other problems, you might just rebuild the head. Only thing mine has needed in over 30 years of steady use. My thread http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333731
Thanks. It's actually my boss's compressor at work, it's starting to randomly blow off when running, service guy figured valves and rings to be safe, bottom end was probably ok. The boss decided to just buy a new larger compressor and not bother paying t have this one serviced, I'm hoping to negotiate the release of the pump once the new compressor arrives.

That is a 7.5 to 10hp pump. http://www.aircompeq.com/ka.htm Do you have the power to run it? If so probably well worth the investment. When you say

What exactly does that mean? pressure relief blowing off, leaking unloader valve, popping the circuit breaker?

no neat sig line

Yep 7.5hp, I had been looking for either a 5 or 7.5hp compressor for my home machine shop. I've got a 100 amp service to my garage.

When I say it's been popping off, I mean the over pressure relief valve, I believe the one on the low pressure side starts to "sputter" as the pump gets close to max pressure.

Sounds like there is absolutely nothing wrong with the compressor internals- just needs a new relief valve. This is not surprising, the spring or valve seat can weaken/wear out over time. Make sure any replacement is rated for the same pressure (psi) and flow (cfm).

We did have a service guy look at it, he said he suspected the rings were allowing some blow by and the valves were packed full of carbon. He thought the high pressure valves may have been jamming up from the carbon and that's why the blow off valve was popping. He did put a new blow off valve on it and it ran fine for about 4 weeks before starting to do it again. That's why I assume it's going to be a top end rebuild if I get it.

I missed that it was the LP safety valve popping. My bad. Agreed that head should be pulled and valves checked for wear and cleaned. Definitely worth rebuilding. Bad rings should cause the crankcase vent to weep air.

Worth rebuilding if the bores are ok and you don't hear knocking which might indicate crank or small end wear. Pull the valve caps and valves, inspect the bores. Look for scoring or oil pooling on the piston crowns. If ok, you can probably get away with a head overhaul kit and be done with it. Blowing interstage valves mean the HP inlet valves are not working properly. Could be as simple as taking them apart, cleaning them, lapping the seats and reinstalling.

Definitely no knocking. I won't know what the bores are like until I get a chance to get the heads off.
