We have a 9.5yr old fridge.

The ice maker hasn't worked since I replaced the dispenser arm for ice. (Plastic is your friend, but not on some designs.) Usually, I would think "last thing done is the likely culprit," but I don't know.

Two observations:
  1. using the black wire towards bottom as neg., and each of the other 3 as pos., it shows 120v.
  2. The black plastic block bolted to the ceramic coated tray is cracked.

Safe to drop the coin on a new assy?

If it's a Whirlpool built Kenmore, the ice makers are common & fairly inexpensive as far as replacement parts go, but are you sure it's bad?

Yeah, there are a lot of interchangeable models. That is even true buying the pur water filters for it.

I do want to avoid firing the parts cannon.

On http://www.appliancerepair.net/refrigerator-repair-8.html

I did the L to M motor test under no power. About 160ohm vs. 8800 spec.

The L to H heater test was 75ohm vs. 72 spec.

I will do the power-on tests tomorrow, and I bet be ordering a new ice maker module.

Best just to order a new one. Too often the Teflon coating starts to wear off after a few years. The generic replacements on Amazon are pretty cheap.

The other tests show there's power to the unit,

2.2v for motor and heater.

thermo off. Valve off.

thanks for the link on the one you bought.

Working well.

But, not putting out new cubes very often.

I bumped the adjustment for the freezer colder, in hopes the thermostat detector triggers cubes more frequently. 2 or 3 cycles a day is not enough.

I went ahead and taught the wife how to trigger the harvest cycle. Hope the automation works out better.

Let the thing catch up after 24hrs or so before you all harvest! Keeping freezer at a low temp helps too. Check your heating element and make sure its operational (Dont think about sticking fingers on it for fingertip test)! Owwwww

Cube size is fine.

I triggered a harvest a few times and am not sure it has worked since. lol

If I am lucky, the thermo-switch shorted out, I can use the old one, and all will be well. We'll see.
