Kennedy curbside treasure

On my way in to work this past Monday, in full rush hour traffic at 30 mph, I spied this grungy little guy sitting curbside, waiting to be adopted. Thousands had driven by to no avail. Decided to go back and take a look to see if it was what I thought it was. Near disbelief overwhelmed me.
Sure enough, picked it up and put it in the trunk.
About an hour's worth of work and a little elbow grease later, it cleaned up well. Some of the felt lining in the drawers had to be sacrificed. No front cover or leather on top handle. Some surface rust in a few of the drawers, but nothing too bad.
As a testament to the quality of Kennedy boxes, all I had to do was lube the slides and hinges a little bit. Drawers and top lid close easily and this will once again be a good box with many years of life left in it. Can't beat the price, either.

That is really a survivor, I haven't seen a box like that in a long time. I don't believe they have made a box with the squared corners on the top in a long time. I would think it must be at least 30+ years old

There's only one thing better than scoring something cheap at the flea market, and thats a freebie. Be it roadside foraging, dumpster diving or whatever the means, just great.
Congratulations!!

Last summer, on a trash day in my neighborhood, I hapened to notice two metal toolboxes sitting out by the curb with a bunch of other trash. I thought I might find a use for them in my barn, so i went back and grabbed them. I expected them to be empty, but they were full of tools! Wrenches, punches, screwdrivers, and all sorts of other old American-made tools.

I got real lucky with my Kennedy roll cab back in 1990.
Local company was going out of business and having a blow out sale.
I got my Kennedy roll cab & a small two-drawer Kennedy box for $200.
They even gave me an extra 10% off for a couple of small scratches of the roll cab??

I believe suckage can be awarded on a right time/right place/right eye/right price basis. Cash wouldn't have to be involved, would it? Because "price" could mean many other things besides money.

I say yes a grand suckage should be awarded if no cash is involved. However if you scored item is from a friend or family member then that could be a technical violation.

Great find, Borrego. People don't know what they have when they put stuff like that at the curb.

Several years ago, guy had a five drawer rollaway at the curb. I'm not sure of the brand, seems to be a knockoff of a craftsman or something...has friction slides. It was in decent shape, and there were a bunch of assorted tools he was pitching too...several old craftsman clamps among them. All of that stuff now sits in my garage. :pimpflash

are you guys saying that people put stuff on the curb in order to have it picked up?
or was it just thrown away?

I've heard of something similar with furniture in Germany - put it out on a certain day and anyone can have it. Anything left the next day is picked up by the local trash people.

Cool find! I've got the same box under my workbench.
I've had it so long I can't remember how or where i got it.
Mines green and still has all the felt.
I've thought about selling it 'cause I've never really used it, but then I always think I'll find a use for one day.

It can happen either way. People here are wasteful and throw all kinds of things away. Not everything is wrapped up ( especially around Spring cleanup time ) so sometimes good items are plainly visible. Other folks arent as wastefull and sometimes when they put things out for trash pickup they make salvageable things extra noticeable so that someone will take it.

That was a decent find.I am also a good curbside picker. Everytime I see a decent pile I will stop regardless. I scored a near new back pack blower one time that just needed carb work and have had it over 8 years now.

I'd say if you leave it out a few days before or right after trash day, you're putting it out there for someone to get. If you're putting it out the night before trash pickup, you don't give a ****.

Stuff left at the street is where my lawn furniture came from! :lol_hitti

Twice a year we have these "neighborhood clean up days." That's when you can cut your whole tree down and throw it out in the street; and they're also for throwing stuff out that won't fit in your trash can the rest of the year. The rich neighborhoods don't have clean up days, however. :D

Are the rich neighborhoods the places where the people live whom DIDN'T invest their every cent into Snap ON tools?
