Well i wasn't expecting to get started for another 3 weeks or so, but my footing and slab guy called me yesterday and said he had an opening and wanted to know if he could get started. He came over last night and we signed the papers and set the pins for the corners of the building.

The worst part is I'm out of town on business for the next 3 days, so I'll miss a lot of the fun.

He expects to have block laid and be ready for fill by Monday. I'm going to be taking care of putting vapor barrier, insulation, wire mesh, and PEX under the slab Tuesday or Wednesday. He says he expects to have the slab completely done by the end of next week. I'm really excited.

Sorry I don't have any pictures yet, as I said, I'm traveling at the moment and only have my work laptop.

I wish you were going to be there too. Been nice if you could have set a webcam up. Anyway, tell the guy you plan on having a build album and need some pics. You don't have to tell him the real reason!

;):D

Had a friend stop by and check things out today. He said the footer looks good, and everything is in place to lay the block. I can't wait to see it!

What are your plans for the place?

One 20x30 section will be walled off as a woodworking shop. There will be one bay dedicated to a 4-post lift, and a double-wide bay in the center for parking. Should also be room for another work bench and tool storage in the such at the end of the parking area. Will also have attic storage above all but the lift area.

Will post some pictures on Saturday when I get home.

That's gonna be great garage. And you have a beautiful home! That's the kind of place I'd like to visit as in a bed a breakfast for a couple days. (I'll have to look into that)

Meanwhile, I'd hit that pile of mesh with some phosphoric acid solution before spreading out for the slab. No need to start the rust process too early. ;) I think inspectors around here will allow a light hazing of surface rust with the majority of the metal showing it's natural gray color.

Yeah, unfortunately, only 1.15 acres are mine. And 0.15 is right-of-way. Maybe someday my neighbor will sell me a few more acres.

Thanks for the kind words. I bought the home in '09 and have done a lot or work. I have done my best to maintain and bring back the original charm.

So has the Farmer subdivided his road frontage up to 1 acre blocks?
The view from your garage looks like hundreds of acres.

No, I think there are 3-4 parcels that make up about 80 acres that are contiguous. He owns more across the road, and more scattered around. He has 2 HUGE Caterpillar (by brand and tread) tractors. My land was divided from a 10-acre parcel just before I bought it. Man I wish I could have bought the other 9 acres for what he paid for it, but I think it was a family member who sold it to him.

Today's progress. I'm really impressed with these guys. I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to lay the vapor barrier, 2" foam, wire mesh, and PEX. They plan to pour on Thursday.

Around $1100 for 2" foam (got about a third of what I needed for $10/sheet on CL), $500 for pex, $200 for a manifold, probably another $50 for misc. I haven't priced anything of the equipment yet, and that part may not happen this year.

Ahhh....I could wreak havoc in all that empty space behind your shop build site! Taxi the R/C's straight from the bench to the sky! LOL.

 Here's to hoping you acquire more of the property!

Took yesterday off work and had a retired buddy give me a hand with the vapor barrier, 2" foam, wire mesh, and PEX. Got 5 of 6 rolls of PEX done. My contractor had a job to bid my way, so he came by to see how I was coming. Said everything looked good. I'm really happy with him! He seems to be doing a great job, he's been punctual, and returned my calls.

I also took this afternoon off to finish the last loop, add some insulation up the block, set and pressure test the manifold. Had to tighten the heck out of the compression fittings! Still have a few pieces of foam to put around the perimeter and need to fill the tubes with water before they pour It started raining and I decided to take pictures and call it a day. Took 100+ pictures of the tubes and a tape measure so hopefully I'll know where the tubes are if I ever need to.

Also the neighbor stopped by (the one who owns the HUGE pole barns in some of my pics and told me what a great job I was doing.

Here are a few pictures:

My slab was poured today. Was originally scheduled for Thursday, but the forecast wasn't so good, so they delayed which worked out well as I had a few things to finish up when it started raining wednesday night

As far as I can tell, they did a superb job! First truck pulled in the driveway at 8:12, and the 3rd truck was hosing off his chute at 9:21. Unbelievable!

Now for the proof:

Don't have any pics, but thought I'd give an update. Spent most of the week trying to get quotes on my materials and finally started placing order/picking up yesterday. Got my bottom plates laid out and got my studs precut (too cheap to buy 10' precuts). Hopefully start assembling some walls tomorrow.

This is going to be a slow build. I'm by myself most of the time and generally work 7-5 or so.

Just a quickie and my 100th post. Nailed studs to 60 ft of bottom plate tonight. Talked myself into hand nailing galvanized nails into the PT bottom plate, and didn't feel like dragging the compressor out tonight or I'd have done the tops as well. Hoping to get walls up this weekend and start getting some sheathing on.

Here's a pic:

Hope you have a few helpers to raise that wall or is it in segments.

You must be slowly smiling as it takes shape.

Oh no, it's all in 10' sections. I can't imagine trying to get all that up and braced at once! Hmm speaking of bracing, I'm going to need some stakes.

Your floor finish looks really good. When the fella done mine he had just finished the last powerfloat pass when the heavens opened and a downpour took off the smooth surface. He never managed to get it covered in time

Yeah, I was really happy with the work they did. Would definitely hire him again.

I did a little sidewalk up to my steps and had a downpour as I was trying to get the control joints cut. It has a non-skid finish, I'll say that much. One of these days I may try to put some resurfacer on it.

Had some help today and got 3 of my walls up. Also had another load of materials delivered (OSB, some lumber, 18' garage door, patio door). here are a couple pictures. I finished the top plates and added some more bracing after these were taken.

This afternoon I got 5 windows framed and 4' of sheathing around 3 sides. I had a little miscalculation on my window framing and ended up adding some additional studs because I originally put the kings in the wrong place. Oh well, $10 worth of wood. It started to rain just as I was getting the last piece up and gave me enough time to get my tools put away.

I'm hoping to get the rest of the sheathing and the housewrap up this week. I have some other stuff going on next weekend and may not have much time for the build. Trusses and LVLs are scheduled to come sometime next week and the plan is to rent some equipment and set trusses over Memorial Day weekend.
