When they get hungry, they'll find a way down. That's why we don't rescue cats out of trees.

Have you ever seen a cat's skeleton in a tree ? :lol_hitti

Yeah, amazing how that works. They have pretty well solved my mouse problem though, and they are so much more lovable than traps and poison.

Looks phenomenal. I wasn't expecting the trussing change, but that gambrel sure does go hand in hand with the classic look of the truck!

Quick Update:

Sheeting, housewrap, and windows are done. Going a bit slower now as there isn't as much urgency, and it is @$%^# HOT!

I've decided I'm going to go with red steel siding. After weiging several options (fiber cement, Engineered wood, vinyl and metal), metal is only more expensive than fiber-cement/engineered wood in the trim and should be maintenance free for a long time.

Well, I've been dead for a while. Was our of town a couple weekends, had people over last weekend, got called into work this weekend. I've been doing a lot of little odds and ends which haven't contributed to a log of satisfaction, but that's about to change.

Since last post I have:
Installed 2 service doors
Painted, installed, and caulked Smart-Trim
Started installing trim for my siding

I'm hoping to take a little comp-time this week to make up for the time lost this weekend and start getting some siding up.

Got a couple pieces of trim up and had to see what the siding was going to look like:

Love the siding choice. You going to flash in a ledger board for you deck for the upper door, or are you just planning on a stairway?

For the moment, it's just going to be a ladder whenever I need to get up there. Eventually, I plan to build a deck. I just don't have the energy or the funds for a deck right now.

Very nice, I really like it.

Im not knocking your work, it is fantastic. That wood center post near your lift section of your building- im thinking maybe in the future you might end up replacing it with a steel post. After the upstairs gets a bunch of weight in it, im guessing the wood post might bow some.

I'm guessing that pole only provides support for the ridge beam over the lift area, the gambrel trusses shouldn't need a center support at all.

True.

In fact, if he glued and screwed ply lining to the side of the truss, he could eliminate the pole all together.

Yeah, the post looked OK when I bought it, by the time I got it installed, it was a little bowed, and now it is worse. I've been thinking about your idea there, and I think it should work.

The 4x6s that I use out front of my garage have bowed and twisted as they have dried. I think the only possible way to keep them straight is to clamp them to a steel I beam and let them dry for a few months.

Well, I finally feel like I have something worth posting. I finished up my carriage house doors today. Still need to figure out how I'm going to open them and keep them closed (i.e. lock), but they are installed, and I think they turned out great.

Do you have any pics of the doors as they were built or close up pictures of them ?

I don't have any pics of the doors being built. They are very similar to Fine Homebuilding. I used finger joint 2x4s for the frame instead of LSL covered with 1/2" OSB on the outside and 1/4" Luan on the inside covering 2 sheets of 3/4" polyiso. Glued and screwed the heck out of it. The trim is LP SmartTrim. The siding is scrap from my window/door cutouts. The windows are double-pane windows that I had leftover after replacing the windows in the house. I still have quite a few sash leftover if anybody is interested. Hinges came from McMaster Carr. I still need to figure out some weatherstripping and how to open and close the doors.

I'll try to get some close-ups tomorrow.

Also, word of caution on the finger-joint lumber, I think it came from Canada and is metric. Turns out it measures about 3 5/16" instead of 3 1/2"

Terrific build and utilization of the giant attic space. Love the vertical red steel on walls and windows and door selection. Variety and placement all optimal as I can tell.

Curious whether you considered HVAC and ramifications of living space need for water and sewer? Consider attic fan to get cheap cool air into the building? Or is attic pure storage only?

Only build question is why the short truss when it changes from Gambrel to normal?

Keep up excellent work and pictures!

Thanks. I'm very happy with the way it has turned out.

I considered a bathroom, but my septic tank is uphill and on the other side of the house. I've thrown around the idea of making an apartment in the attic, but I think I'd rather have the storage space and not deal with tenants next door. Heating will be in floor and if it gets too hot to be out there, I'll stay in the house.

Not sure what you mean about "short truss." The gable portion has a cathedral ceiling (rafters hung from ridge beam) to give me the headroom for a 4-post lift.

My bad on prior short truss comment. What I was seeing in picture was soffet overhang where transition is on roof from larger to smaller trusses. Soffet has to quit before edge of roof otherwise the water running down roof would rot out that section. It's perfect just like it is!

In total, you've built terrific building for reasonable overall cost.

My HVAC question was also whether you would pursue air conditioning?

Yep, overhang is truncated so water/snow/debris doesn't collect. No plans for A/C.

Nice build, enjoyed reading and watching. You can use a grinder pump if if decided to put in a bathroom.
The pumps come in a selfcontained sump, just connect the 3" from your bathroom, 2" discharge to the inlet of you septic tank and plug in. All the floats are in place.
You only have to run 2" to the house. Works great. I put one in outside the horse barn and had no trouble for over 6 years and it gets load tested all the time.

Any updates Kert? Merry Christmas!

Well I got my electric hooked up. I have a few shop-lights hanging for temporary light. I've been working on wiring and I'm almost done. I built a partition wall for my woodworking shop. I have my floor heat kludged together enough keep the pipes from freezing. That's about it.

Things have been slow lately. We had an awakening with my dad a couple months ago and I've been to visit him a few times and I've been trying to talk to him just about every day. On top of that, work has been rough. With my current manager, I'm afraid to even leave on time and when I get home I'm so stressed I don't feel like doing much. In the end, I'm doing well to get 2 hours in an evening 3 days a week plus weekends.

This weekend, I'm hoping to finish up the wiring and frame the dropped part of the ceiling in my lift-bay.

While I'm off work for the holidays, I'm hoping to get started on insulation.

I'm hoping to be ready for drywall by February.
