Yes he did, and he said something that sort of caught me off guard. He asked me if I still wanted him to quote on it.
He already gave me a quote of $52,000. He is either drinking too much, or smoking those funny cigs. He did say that if I needed him for anything in the future to let him know, and he said he'll stop buy once in a while to see how things are going. He was actually very nice about everything. I think the $52,000 was just to see if I'd bite or not, and if I did, fine for him. If I didn't, then he'd make up a REAL quote. To me, that is about the same as lying to me, and I don't go for that ****. He just tried to put the screws to me with the $52,000 except he didn't realize that I do my homework. When I found out #1 was going to sub everything out to him anyways for $37,000, and #1 needed to make money also, I had a good idea what #4 would be charging #1. He'll try to stroke another contractor, but try to put the screws to me.But that's all water under the bridge now. Today, I have to deal with a landscaper to move a Weeping Spruce. Now he's got a shitload of balled and burlapped trees on the back of his truck, yet he tells me this is not a good time to move a tree. BUT......he has a tree spade. Pop one out and pop and pop it in another hole with minimal root disturbance. Plus it pissed and poured last night, and for the next two days it is supposed to be cloudy and cooler, so I think it will transplant okay. And if it can't be moved, it goes on the burn pile because it HAS to be moved.

Contractors can be funny, I know when I am busy or a job doesn't interest me I may throw a really high price. If they bite, I will gladly do the job if not, oh well. I am not in residential construction so the market is different. I will say that when a job is in my backyard, I like to get it, even if it means making a little less.

It exploded the other day. There was a plug in the tire in the area of the explosion. It sounded like a 12 gauge shotgun going off, and it blew gravel everywhere. Luckily I was on the opposite side of where it happened and I still got hit in the face where it drew blood. If anyone was on the side it happened on, it could have easily put someone's eye out. I had a bunch of gravel in the garage at the foot of the back wall, where it had hit the wall. Was just waiting on another tire so we had that one off.
Haven't seen the movie yet.

Kevin: that tree might be hard to save with a shovel. do you have any backhoes showing up that might be able to dig it out and place it in a new freshly dug hole? fresh dirt and maybe some fertilizer and you might save it with plenty of water after it quits raining. since it's not the middle of summer you have a chance, but usually February or October are good times to transplant.
it is a cool tree and don't blame you for trying to save it. good luck and if it has to be a shovel just try not to cut too many roots. i can't say if the main root on that tree is straight down or more likely a couple feet around the trunk.

Kevin: well that is some shovel. so was he saying he might not be able to save it or did he need a couple Benjamins to convince him? I've never moved a tree with one of those, but I've moved a few 6 foot trees and bushes by hand.

Actually, I wuz thinking about using some kind of Volvo logo. Think that will work?
No pics yet, but we ran into a little mess today while digging the footers. We hit two 8" corrugated tiles buried almost 4' down in solid clay. I think with the direction they are running, they were overflow tiles for the pond. They are larger than what would be used for a curtain drain, and they wouldn't be my septic as I already got all of that verified with the Health Department, and we are no way near the fingers of the septic leach bed. Plus there is no gravel or socks on the tile. But the tiles were full of water, and it smelled just like pond muck. You take an 8" tile, and probably 150' long x's 2, and we had a lot of water flow into the trench. Which cost me another $150 for a sump pump, another $225 for another days rental of the mini excavator, a missed inspection for tomorrow because of the problems, and I lost my Weeping Spruce tree because you can't get anyone in this county to do anything
The guy that was going to spade the tree out was SUPPOSED to be here this morning. At 3:30 this afternoon, the tree was in the way, so I told Craig to unplug it, and I'll buy a new one.
Not a good Monday for working. And to top it off, I was helping out some, and had to break down and put on my CarHartt coat, as it was cold and drizzly out, and a high temp of 51 degrees. Tomorrow should be better as it supposed to be sunny and 73. We'll get things squared away tomorrow somehow, and get the trench the rest of the way drained out in a couple of areas. Inspection should be Wednesday, and concrete Thursday. I'll have a few pics tomorrow though of the progress
if I can call it that.

Kevin, Even here doing works I have found and drilled through water pipes that should not have been in that location. Even worse when it is a rain water pipe from a tank supply system.

Hey Kevin , did you considered filling the bath tub and let it drain out to make sure nothing came out of those tiles ? If the septic is full and possibly running off, a tub full of water might come out if by chance those tiles are connected to the leechbed.

It's not a leaching system of any type other than off of the pond as far as I can figure. And when I took a shower, used the stool a few times, the wife taking her shower, and some laundry, no more water came out. Plus the fact that it is in solid clay tells me it isn't part of the leach bed. If it was, it wouldn't have been buried that deep, and it would have had to have some gravel around it plus a sock. I had problems with the pond ever since we bought the house in '93, and an abandoned tile was always suspected as the cause of the leak, but no one could locate one. I did have one flat spot in the pond though when I drained it down at one time that looked unusual, and I thought it was where a tile came in from the house gutters, but I'm sure it was an overflow now that got plugged because there is no exit to the tile anywhere. And being that the tile is in solid clay, there would be no way that it would ever leach anyways. The black water, as far as I know, is just old pond water and pond muck that has been in there for a few years. Once you smelled the pond when it drained, there was no mistaking that smell. I'm not going to worry about it, and just dump a bag or two of sakrete where the end of it is
Maybe I should have jinxed myself
But I didn't lie. I told the contractor this morning by text that the moat was full of water and turds just to make sure he was awake. He was going to forget the dump trailer rental today and just haul *** down here, until I finally told him I was kidding

if you did put down a PVC pipe to help drain the pond would there be a place to drain it to or was that the problem with the concrete version?
I've been on the other end of those prank calls by clients and not the best way to start the morning so hoping you don't get punked later today. hopefully he has a good attitude like you do and he won't accidently knock you in the hole.

About the same time that I arrived, dump trucks full of top soil started dumping in the front yard.
I asked "Is there anything that I need to watch for? Have you had a locate?"
No, no. It's all fresh ground, not worries about gas lines or anything.
I start the excavator up and get to digging. Had his whole back and side yard dug. As I came around to the front yard, I see him leave.
Just as I started the ditch in the front yard, I hit his water service line.
He's gone, isn't answering his phone, and can you guess where the water meter is?
