Kevin,

I wandered in here looking for ideas for my garage remodel and stumbled on your build thread.

I bet we know a lot of the same people. My brother owns the laundromat in town. Yea, the one that has been completely remodeled.

I grew up out on Middle Urbana Rd. As soon as I saw "Short Cut" I knew exactly what house you were....my brother lives at the corner of Post and Urbana Morefield. The house with all the landscaping and big building out back.

I'm headed your way for a wedding August 15. It's on the farm across the road from Carter Lumber. I'll be there the entire week after screwing off. I'll help out around there if you need it. Just feed me. LOL....

I can guess who you had bids from....my brother has done EVERYTHING at the laundromat because the contractors around there are complete morons. Even the one guy I could recommend lacks in finishing details. Hard worker though....

Does the guy you are using live out by La Palma restaurant by chance?

Try and stay dry....

Chris

What a small world. Most of the ones I spoke with live by LaPalma, but I think I know who you are talking about. when you are close by, please be sure to pop in, and we'll exchange some stories:lol: I know where your brother lives and was just past there yesterday. But please do stop by so we can meet each other.

Here is a shot of the second wall up. The front wall is going up tomorrow, then that is it for the walls. Trusses are supposed to be here Monday and I confirmed it today with the lumber yard. Now to see if they are true to their word as far as ordering them correctly.

And yes......for you Ohio guys.....that is sunshine at 7:30 this evening. Just about blinded me when it came out.

Nice Kevin!

So happy for you. You really deserve it.

I'm glad you seem to be drying out finally. I was beginning to think I should send you a care package containing swim fins, water wings and a swim fin. I'm looking forward to seeing your vision becoming reality.

Don't take it the wrong way, we are far from drying out. The rain just takes a break every now and then to recharge, then start dumping on us again.

I hope your crew starts early !

They're supposed to be here any minute. The rest of the walls should be finished up today, then we will all have a break until this coming Monday or Tuesday when the trusses are supposed to be here.

Nail gun works flawlessly, and when we go to set the trusses, we are doing it by hand........hopefully

Today is supposed to be a BEAUTIFUL day! I am anxious to see how much you get done today!

Nothing too much as the walls are now up :rocker::rocker: I need to snap a few pics, and run to the lumber yard for (4) treated 2x6's fore the jambs on the garage doors, wrap a few places, then just wait for the trusses to arrive. Those will be here Monday, then we will get back on it.

I'll have some pics here in a few.

The last of the walls. All I have to do is trim some sheeting off around the doorway, and then put the housewrap on. And yes, the middle piece of sheeting is a little crooked. We were trying to get it on before we got wet, and someone let their side drop some. 100 years from now, no one will give a ****.

I also did some quick calculations, and the garage is now 2184 sq. ft. Our house living space is 2176 sq. ft. I think all in all, that is a fair trade with the wife.

Kevin: you are doing a nice job especially consider all the rain you've been getting. nice that the sun is drying everything up before you put on the tresses.

take a well deserved rest and maybe go over the electrical plan or anything you think might need attention. We all hope the weather stays nice for next week for you.

cheers

Looks good Kevin, of course once its completed you will have to pony up for a few more projects!

By the way, I think you have sent your rain down our way, we have had the most rain since 1874 and no let up forecasted all the way through next Friday. My carefully regraded and graveled roads from this spring are now a mess, the gardens are all but kaput, and weeds have taken over the farm.

It will be "interesting" to see how you are going to marry the new roof to the old !

Too bad you can't get the trusses for the bump out early and get that weathered in. Flashing the roof of the bump out to the existing garage wall is key for no leaks. One piece aluminum flashing ? Ice and water shield membrane ? Step flashing ?

Same to everyone on here. Watch for the drunks on the road, and don't blow off any fingers with the fireworks. And no shooting fireworks out of the vehicle while drunk.

Here....hold my beer, take the wheel and watch this :lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

The neighbor is doing great. Show him once, and he is on top of the game. He did mark some studs wrong though, and that may have been my fault. A lot of people have a hard time understanding me when I speak. I needed the studs marked at 116 5/8" and he marked them at 116 1/8". I caught it when we were nailing the walls together. He felt terrible and was going to buy more studs I think. I told him not to worry about it as they would get used anyways for Jack Studs. He marked 11, and by the time we cut up Jack studs and some blocking, they were all used up.

It's funny because everyone things I am super **** about things, yet they worry more than I do. All in all, we've worked together on this, but we've all had a good time doing it. Either the beginning of this thread, or it may have been one other.......one member said he wouldn't work for me for anything because of the fact that I went through 4 contractors before I picked this one to do the work, and basically I was a ***** for bitching about the others prices. This contractor told me the other day that he wished all customers were as easy to get along as I am.

With the rain we've been having, his business is suffering some, and he's having a hard time getting to some jobs to get a cash flow going, so the other day I advanced him $3000. Not all people would do that with a contractor, but I know Craig, he's worked for me before, and has always treated me right. He keeps everything wrote down, I keep everything wrote down, and just like when we went over on the quote for the concrete, he was going to eat that cost but I made it square with him. He did ask me to pay the neighbor. I told him to pay him a fair wage as the neighbor is basically working for him and not me, so he was good with that. I just wish more contractors around here were like Craig is. I keep trying to tell him to advertise here in Urbana, and he'd probably have more business than he would want, because you can't find ones around here to work, and that's a fact. Most of the work I see getting done is done by out of towners or out of county.

But yea, to answer your question, my neighbor is doing great and has been an asset when it comes to help. For one, he works out and has quite a bit of strength. A real asset when it comes to moving something or lifting something. When everyone else is carrying one sheet of OSB, he's carrying three. When everyone is carrying two studs, he's carrying six or seven at a time. He's definitely a real time saver for sure :spit: And he's really going to be a big help when it comes to rafters, because they are going up by hand.

Wow I must of missed when the *** hat said that they wouldn't work for you. I would of told the ***** off and would of gotten some time off line, but it would of been worth it. Pm. me who said that would you. I think you are doing great. Keep up the great work...****

I am Glad to see the neighbor is working out for you. Good relationship to maintain and you guys can work together in the future. And he is picking up some skills. Maybe instead of telling him something, show him by example. People learn things by different ways.

Kevin: sounds like everything is a go for a busy week and hoping everything goes pretty smooth. rest up because those tresses are not light or that easy to install.

another method I've used because i might be loud, but not always heard especially with my kids is to hand them a scrap piece of wood with a penciled measurement on it if i needed a board(s) cut.

has the contractor that never gave you an official bid driven by and seen the worked or stopped to chat. :D

cheers and have a great 4th

No he hasn't. And the last I heard, he built a house for a woman last year and has yet been there to finish up some problems, yet he has told another person that he was too busy to build my garage. Another member also knows who he is, and this member is from Cincinnati which is a couple of hours away, or at least his BIL is. He was looking for someone to remodel a business here in town and ran into the same problems, and had to go out of town for a contractor. It's really sad. So any contractors looking for work, just come to Urbana, and get signed up with them and grab yourself some business. :spit:

BTW.....I picked up my roofing felt and ice guard yesterday. That was not a cheap trip. The ice guard is $60/roll. And the 30# felt is $20/roll if anyone is interested in knowing the price. A lot of times it's the small things that really start to add to the price of a building that some do not consider when pricing things. Even a box of strip nails for an air nailer will take the better part of a hundred dollar bill.

Oh, and another BTW......all of the other contractors have been past the house rubber necking, but #4 actually does stop to chat and see how things are going. Even my next door neighbor / relation finally came over to see how things are going, which surprised me. He didn't want the job and was one of the first ones I asked. Once things are done, then a few of them will tell me that they probably could have beat the price.

While I have it on my mind.......I am going to finish the inside of the garage off with drywall and corrugated metal like I currently have, but it may be a different color.

One area that I really don't know how to finish off is the area along the wall where my current garage doors are. I have to leave the rafters, but I will have an end truss at the end, and a wall ran straight up to the peak . This leaves me with an area that has and 8 foot ceiling for a depth of 6 feet. I was thinking about making it look like it was outside and to use cedar siding on that wall, then have recessed lighting underneath. If you were faced with that situation, how would you finish that wall off? Make it the same as the rest of the walls, or do something totally different? I've seen a few pics of members that had something like that, and they make that particular wall look like you are outside looking in.

If you had a wall like this in your garage, how would you finish it off? Make it look like the rest of the walls, or make it look a little unique? :headscrat

Kevin: i think you were saying you were going to leave your old garage doors so you could just heat up your old shop area and not have to heat the new garage. yes? i guess i'm not sure which wall you are talking about unless you are talking about taking the garage doors out and making that a wall?

here to help if i can and just trying to make sure i know which wall you are talking about.

cheers

I'd definitely finish it differently - do you have some wall art or street signs that would look good there? Maybe you could use that area for some of your specific fabrication tools and have the walls match the type of work you do there.

I'm leaving the old garage doors on, but I don't know whether to drywall that wall, or make it look like it is outside still. But yes, that is the wall in question

Finish it in matching Sheetrock/paint or the tin. Put a big sign with some type of led light shining on it. It could serve as a nightlight. I'm sure it will look good however you do it.

Kevin: i'd probably sheet rock or finish like your new garage interior so it matches which i think you said sheet rock. then make that the wall you either hang metal signs, pictures or shovels and rakes since it's not very much space.

your the man that gets to choose, but if you have lots of signs to cover up the wall save the money from having to do sheet rock then maybe make them the décor.
