Kevin: best of luck wishes and if possible i'd like to loan you some of our weather here in Seattle. it's been in the 80's and 90's for maybe a month and hasn't rained in about two months now. i bet we had rain every day in October and November and we usually have some up til August, but i guess you guys in the Midwest and Texas are getting it all this year.

i hope you find a little window in the weather to at least get the tresses on the bump out and get it roofed so you can open that area from your shop.

have you recovered from your long road trip?

cheers buddy and i have all our fans on blowing some heat your direction.

CB: nice picture :D

This is off topic, but how far off RT 70 are you? Just made a trip to Indy and back to the east coast.

About 15 miles north if that far. Maybe more like 10. Straight up St. Rt. 68 @ Springfield, then a couple of miles off to the East from there.

just checking in to see if there is an update.

Tonight I'll have some pics. Batteries went dead in the camera, and just taking a small lunch break. Bumpout is dried in, and getting ready to set the trusses on the large addition after the guys get back from chowing down.

In my experience, buying them lunch typically works out in your favor. More so if weather is an issue.

The bumpout is dried in, and we got started on the trusses on the main part.

The bumpout is dried in, ...

I really like how that turned out. It looks like it has been there all along ! Now if the monsoons return, you will have some dry space to work on.

Another day and the rest of the garage should be dry except for the doors.

7 Rains........

That was what we counted as the maximum you wanted lumber to get, from the time it was produced, transported, stored at the lumberyard, sold, delivered to the jobsite, installed and dried in.

Looks like you're going to beat the number.

I agree about the bump out, it looks great. I think that was a great idea adding that to the garage.

I know myself, I'm sick of all this rain. I can't imagine how frustration it is for you Kevin trying to get this built. A buddy of mine just ordered the metal for new roof on his shop. We'll probably need to replace some plywood after stripping the shingles. I'm not sure how we'll get it done with this weather as it's usually nice on the days that I work.

All of my rolling boxes, work bench, and overhead cabinets are going in there so I have an open existing garage. I'll buy me a rolling tool cart to roll back and forth to the machines or the vehicles

After raising those trusses and setting them by hand, everyone was sort of beat and decided to cut out for the day. I was thankful for that as I also needed to mow. We were no sooner done mowing the five acres beside us that it started frickin' raining AGAIN. This has got to be one of the worst summers that I remember forever as far as rain.

Today, there is nothing on the agenda other than cleanup the garage a little more, powerwash the mowers off, and just get things straightened out.

Tomorrow we are going to build the rest of the walls back onto the roof, set the last of the trusses, then start cutting rafters, or at least that is the plan

Oh, and if anyone is interested, so far I am $16,000 into it so far. That is materials and labor, and a $2000 advance yesterday to Craig. I'll be close to my material quote by the time it is all done with. All I have left to buy is my shingles, siding, and my soffit and fascia, so about another $8,000 should cover that. Way better price than $57,000 that I was quoted. I may not be getting things done as fast, but it is getting done, and about $22,000 cheaper :rocker:

Shoot Bill.......we get 7 rains in a day around here. It just finished sprinkling a little while ago, then the sun came out, but we're due to have rain again today. The pasture looks like **** where the wife and I mowed it, and I still have 2 acres to mow across the road from me. And the pasture next door......we have lived here since '93, and I have mowed the pasture for at least 17 years. This is the first year that water is in areas where there never was water before. I'm pulling up mud when I mow. The pasture has not dried out once this summer except for one week when we were doing the footers, and even then it was still damp enough that the trailer left some decent ruts. Hopefully once the garage is dried in, the rains will stop for a little while....hopefully :dunno: The weather has been trying it's best to keep me from building though.

Considering you're older than me Kevin, I'll trust you on that because I can't remember a Summer this wet either.

Kevin: we had about 30 seconds of rain drops here yesterday. first rain in maybe 3 or 4 weeks. i can remember not playing golf until July some years here because i didn't want to play in the mud. I've lived here for most of my 60 years and this year's weather is the warmest and driest becasue we've had warm weather since the end of January this year. go figure :dunno:

the bumpout looks awesome and you can finally open up the area into your shop. speaking of rain is the tar paper keeping the rain out of your shop?

good luck this week and hope your bad weather changes or gives you a little break.

So far it is. I used 30lb felt, so I hope the extra thickness, and the cap nails keep it from blowing loose. Hopefully we can get started on shingles here shortly before a major storm happens, or at least get them here and set on the roof to help hold things in place until we get it roofed. But so far, so good.

I can't even put rafter ties up. The sun was shining, I got about half of them nailed, and it just decided to dump rain by the bucket full. Every time a nail, hammer, or saw comes out, Mother Nature decides to screw with me. I just finished putting things away, and here comes the sun again.

"The Addition" is looking good Kevin. And man I feel for ya about the weather. Rained so much here in Georgia last fall, winter and spring I just decided to start some other projects that weren't so affected by rain and wet ground conditions.
Hang in there though, you're making great progress.

Kevin, I don't know what you guys got this afternoon but we got slammed with 3 1/2- 4 inches in a few hours.

I have a few crappy cell videos here, as I didn't want to clog up Kevins thread with them.

I can not remember the last time I saw roofer use a cap nail on felt. Hammer stapler is the typical tool of choice.

Of course most crews work at lightening speed. As soon as one side of a roof is strip, half the crew will be rolling out felt and ice shield. They usually are laying shingles by the time the second half is done.

I actually dragged my hoses out and watered the front lawn today !

Now if TruGreen could up with something stronger than 2,4-D I can stop calling them out every 2 weeks ! I am pretty certain that some of my weeds are nutsedge. That stuff comes back from the root even after glyphosate (Roundup).

Clog away. My thread is getting boring with nothing going on.

You got more than we did, but we still get about an inch a day. And it's getting hard to tell the difference between a mosquito and a bird now. The 'skeeters are getting huge, and attack every time you walk out the door, no matter what time it is.

Today we're going to try and get the rest of the trusses set, and the small walls back on to the roof. If we get the measurements, we can build the small walls in the garage then lift them up to the roof.

The weather is talking about flash floods again for today as the ground can't hold any more water. With all of the humidity, and the ground water, it's going to be hard to get out of this cycle of daily rains. We'll need about two weeks of sunshine just to start to break the cycle. The weather people said that all of this is the cause of El Nino`, and if it is, I sure hope that winter goes the other direction and we have a mild snowless winter, instead of a winter that is full of snow, but I think anything weather related is a **** shoot this year. The farmers are worried because the beans are getting destroyed by too much water. We have beans behind us this year, and you can now see them starting to turn yellow. The corn seems to be doing good, but I imagine a lot of it will start to mold also.

Anyways.....not much on the agenda for today as far as getting a lot accomplished, but hopefully we'll get a little something done. A month ago, it was taking things one day at a time. Now it's down to trying to get something done a few hours at a time. If we can get the addition dried in, then we'll have a couple week reprieve, or Craig, Dan, and Ashton will, because momma and I will be staining 1900 sq. ft. of siding in the garage. We figured we'd do that on the ground, then touch up, or give a quick second coat after the siding is hung.

Rafter ties ? Is this on the old garage section ? The picture showed scissors trusses which would not require rafter ties.

My mistake....not rafter ties.....Hurricane ties. Used to fasten down the trusses to the top plates. Someone kept calling them rafter ties, and I got that terminology stuck in my head now. And I hate putting them on. I have to stand above them because of my dislocated, screwed up shoulder, then all of the side nails are going into the truss plates that is used to make the trusses. I've bashed my fingers a few times due to things being awkward. But we got up what we could get up.

And we only have 8 more trusses to go. Hopefully 5 today (if we miss the rain) then we have to make three trusses because I screwed up and didn't order enough. I was planning on an end truss at the eave, but forgot the wall goes back on the main roof by another 7 feet. So instead of ordering three more trusses, we'll just make three and use one of the existing trusses as the pattern.

I bought a palm nailer a few years ago specifically to do the stubby little nails required for the hurricane clips. In lieu of that, an old pair of lineman pliers with a notch ground in the cutting edges will save a few mashed fingers. Palm nailers have become pretty cheap.

Expecting rain here for the next couple of days so I imagine you are either in front or behind us in the rain category.

Yes we do get thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening after hot humid days and that just makes it hot and Humid afterwards and the next day too.

Occasionally a storm Will blow through and bring a cool weather.

Kevin: even though you don't have the roof on your ADDITION yet you already have 50,000 views so there must be something about your thread that keeps us coming back. i'm sure it's mostly about you and the way you write so hopefully the rain will hold off a bit so you can get the roof on.

BTW I know your mosquitoes are a PIA, but i love your descriptions of them.

have a great day

ALL: I've never owned a palm nailer or used one. are they all run off of a compressor or are there battery operated ones? they must be a good tool if you are all talking about them, but i own a couple hundred hammers and now i screw most things together.

Milwaulkee makes a cordless palm nailer.
Palm%20Nailer_zpsqi9mfvuv.jpg

If you already have the batteries and charger, HD sells them for $89.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwauke...dless-Palm-Nailer-Tool-Only-2458-20/203111682

Craftsman also offers an "Electric Hammer" that looks like would work as a hammer without batteries...
Palm%20Nailer%20Craftsman_zpsktzqtwcl.jpg

It comes with a battery and charger for about $60.

I have a small pneumatic palm nailer from Harbor Freight. I rarely use it because I prefer screwing stuff together. And dragging an air hose up a ladder makes them less fun.

Rained out again. Got the majority of the two small walls on to the roof built, the skies turned black, then it just dumped the rain. So no more for today other than ordering some lumber and sourcing some shingles of a color close to what I already have. We'll shoot for tomorrow again, and so far Wed., Thurs, and Fri. is supposed to be nice, but that will change by 5:00
