DANG!

I just stopped by, hoping to see a dried in addition, but no such luck!

We've had a couple of great sunny days over the weekend. At one point there was rain going through, according to the radar, but it turned out to be virga. Nothing reached the ground.

I'd be happy to take the next round of storms for you Kevin, so you can get it done. Just shove them northwards.

Bill

Kevin: as bad as your weather has been i hope the sunshine is sticking around at least until you get the roof on so you don't have to keep putting your tools away and then pulling them out again.

did you cut the hole from the shop into your bump out yet?

Oh, we got our rain. We got hammered. The lawns were flooded everywhere. I would guess that we got 2"+ in less than an hour. Everyone split for the day, and here the sun is out again. But they are calling for decent weather for the next two days, so hopefully we can get the rafters built, and all of the sheeting on the roof, and papered. At least that is the plan, but it's not yet 5:00 for the weather report on the nightly news. When that comes out, they'll probably predict pop up showers for those two decent days.

Gonna give it another shot today as it is SUPPOSED to be nice. Rafters and sheeting. I did wake up early and thought and thought about how to cut a rafter as I haven't done it in a while, then it clicked. Cut myself up a pattern for the compound angle that sits on the roof, and it's perfect or very near it. So as soon as we get a plate on the roof (after everyone shows up) I can get the rafters cut up. I'll have a few pics for this afternoon.

Kevin, did you happen to grab a picture from Google Earth before you started. It's nice to see the before and after from above. They updated my area but it was before I finished the roofing.

We started roofing, it rained, it's too hot to roof now, so back at it in the morning. But at least we are dried in. :rocker: The upright braces on the old roof were just temporary braces while we set the ridge beam. Been a busy week for sure. At least we got something done between rain showers. Now that the roof is going on, it's supposed to be in the upper 80's and in the 90's this weekend, so just a few hours in the mornings until it gets too hot. I don't want anyone getting sick from the heat. It's not worth it. Plus the chance of tearing the shingles up. It will be completely roofed in a couple of days.

Yep....it worked. Had us a little sunshine, and today is a scorcher. The humidity is terrible. I don't do a lot of heat very well. I've had two bouts with either a heat stroke, or severe heat exhaustion, and if I get in a lot of heat and humidity, I'll last just a short while before I get deathly sick. I'm alright if there is a breeze blowing, but that come to a halt after our brief shower a little while ago.

Congrats on getting it dries in Kevin. Watch out tomorrow, it's supposed to nasty hot and humid. Start hydrating tonight.

We stopped at 11:00 as it's just getting too hot to be up there. I can't get on roofs anymore in the heat, and my knees don't like it either, but I don't want to see those guys getting sick from the heat. Just not worth it.

But the bumpout is done, and next on the agenda is the large roof on the addition. Plans are for starting about 6:30 Monday morning and working until it is hot again. We're slowly getting there. also we have to yet build the overhang from the new addition to make a covered porch. That shouldn't take too long to build.

But it's so aggravating that all I can do is cut wood. I can't hold a board and nail at the same time. Thankfully, I have a neighbor more than willing to help. And he's made some fairly decent pocket change in helping. He's also been offered some more work on a few concrete jobs. Craig has offered a few others work on building the addition from his town, but no one wants to get out of bed before 11:00 in the morning, or they just don't want to work at all. I wish I had that option when I needed money.

Kevin,

Do you need skilled help or just general labor? You by chance don't know the older black guy in town named Kenny do you? He is always a huge help to my brother when he needs it. He just can't do much skilled stuff. The crazy ******* will work you into the ground though...damn near killed me last summer trying to keep up with him.

Last I heard he was living up above the bar on Main Street . The one right before the now gone Main News building...

Let me know and I'll give my Brother a call and see what we can do to help ya.

The downside is last summer he didn't have a car so he needs to be picked up...

Chris,
Thanks for the offer, but we have it under control now. Too bad he doesn't live a little further north, or he could probably have a job doing some concrete work, but he'd need a car to do it to get there. BTW....not sure who he is, but I'll ask my neighbor and see if he knows.

Kevin: really happy to hear you have the tresses up and almost have the roof on and finished. it looks like you already made access to the bump out so any pictures to share while you are not working your *** off?

i second the eating and drinking on a regular basis because i usually don't unless i'm working at home with my wife around that has a great routine.

keep up the great progress

What's all this talk about "tresses" Kevin do you have Rapunzel locked in this new addition? Should we send a prince on horse back to investigate? [emoji12]

Joking aside. The addition looks awesome and I am very jealous.

We still have some fine tuning to do by adding the hurricane ties, and another 2x under the rafter seat. But to do that involves crawling on one roof, under another roof. Way too hot for that ****. I'll reserve that for a cool evening, or early a cool morning.

No other pics of anything really until we get the roof on, and that will be this week. I don't know if I mentioned, or if it was the wife and I talking, but the overhang......we decided not to do it. It will let a little more light in without it, plus it will save a few thousand dollars. I really don't, or won't need it anyways, since I will be parking inside, and can walk out through the other entrance door. I still have to put in a sidewalk though, 2 actually, and a replace a section underneath the existing overhang.

Kevin: i can't remember an overhang mentioned on this thread, but you might have. was that maybe an idea you had to put on the side of the new garage (Addition) sort of as a possible carport? I'm guessing you can add that later if your plans change?

hurricane ties and tight spaces under the new roof with the hot weather can wait until evening or even early AM if you have some good lighting.

as always good luck

Kevin,
Good to see things moving along. You might want to consider TimberLOK screws instead of hurricane ties. They meet the 2012 IRC for tying in rafters. I've not used them for that, but I've used a lot of them for other stuff and they certainly go in a lot quicker than the traditional ties with 8-10 special little nails in each one. Search on TimberLOK and you'll find them. HD sells them around here. Of course, make sure your inspector "likes" them first.

Drives.....I showed it back on page 5. It was going to go on the right hand side of the garage. After laying it out, it was going to come out about 8'. I think it will make just too much shade. I'd rather have a little bit of landscaping, and some sunlight along the side of the garage with the windows instead of the overhang. That money saved can be used somewhere else. And like said above, I can always add an overhang on at a later date, but I doubt if I will.

Did you have a lot of scrap doing the bump out ? It seems such a small roof would create alot of wasted shingles or were you able to work out a pattern to conserve scrap ?

Not a lot of scrap at all. With the way Dan cut the shingles, it only left something like some 6" pieces or smaller. One thing with the bumpout, everything came out to nominal sizes. Just like the sheeting, we used full 8' sheets without any cutting. It worked out nice.

Actually with the way I have been getting materials in all, we have had hardly any scrap of anything. I do have some 30" pieces of 2x6's, maybe 5 or 6 pieces, a couple of pieces of 1x12's that we used for the headers, and all of the rest was just some 6" or so pieces of lumber, or the angles left over from cutting the rafters. All in all, maybe a 1/4 of a pickup bed full of scrap if that.

Kevin: i found your drawing on post #176 of the big picture you just posted and sorry for missing it. i guess i would have thought your tresses would have made the overhang with a beam and a post added to hold up the extra amount. did you order smaller tresses so there is just a 18 to 24 inch overhang on the sides of the new garage? any outside pictures to post when you have time should answer my questions.

sorry for all the questions and PM me if you want me to hold my posts until you get done, but i'm enjoying the process you are going through except for the bad weather and worker's issues.

i know some of you old members mention page 5 of the thread and i have never been able to find a post that way. maybe it's because i have the last post show up first, or maybe because i have a bigger font. i'm not sure why, but VA Grouseman is fantastic at looking up posts of old vises on the huge vise thread and now that he mentions the post # we all can find what he found. before that when he mentioned page # i never found them.

cheers and hope you have had a decent rest day. or did you mow the yard today?

That thing is sure coming together Kevin...I decided to add a sunroom to the house this year but after building my Garage by myself last year I figured out I better stick to my day job and pay the tradesmen....
