Not a lot of scrap at all. With the way Dan cut the shingles, it only left something like some 6" pieces or smaller. One thing with the bumpout, everything came out to nominal sizes. Just like the sheeting, we used full 8' sheets without any cutting. It worked out nice.

Actually with the way I have been getting materials in all, we have had hardly any scrap of anything. I do have some 30" pieces of 2x6's, maybe 5 or 6 pieces, a couple of pieces of 1x12's that we used for the headers, and all of the rest was just some 6" or so pieces of lumber, or the angles left over from cutting the rafters. All in all, maybe a 1/4 of a pickup bed full of scrap if that.

Great progress Kevin. Always makes me feel good not to have too much waste. Material is very expensive. I know because I just finished a semi-major project myself.

So it looks like roofing is on for Wednesday.

No roofing until Thursday or Friday now. Forms have to be made this week, and we have a couple more to build, then we have to help Dan with the concrete work, although Ashton and Dan will be doing most of everything. I just get to cut lumber or hold a board here and there. It's giving Ashton some good experience though. It gets me away from the house for awhile. Plus it will shave a few hundred off of my bill for my help. the bad thing though is that Craig just got done bidding on a few concrete jobs and got them, so along with Ashton, Dan is looking for another person to help also. Ashton has a friend that does remodeling, and it would work out great if he is willing to just help out part time. If Aston's friend is not interested, I may have to take up Chris's offer and toss that Dan's way. I'll help out Craig with what I am capable of doing so he doesn't lose the jobs that he just got, and I know mine will be done this week or weekend as far as roofing. After that, all that is left is the doors and siding. And it's up to momma and I to stain the siding anyways, which will take us a week or so to do, maybe 2 weeks. Things will all work out........I hope.

Thanks for helping Craig out. You have to help each other out on jobs like these. You cannot handle all the work yourself. I am sure he appreciates it. Ashton's on the job learning skills and getting experience. You are cutting wood ,'running supplies and acting as "a Safety"' person to these guys. Teamwork is great like this. Hopefully all the guys will remember this job and reach out to the others when they need a hand.

Plus you get out of the house and do something different for a change.

You know your limits so don't push it especially in this heat

I don't want a side job, and I'm limited as to what I can do anyways. I'm mostly the gopher Ashton goes with me so he can learn some things, then he is the one working for Dan, And like I said before, it gets me away from the house for awhile.

As far as Craig, he put off going to the docs until yesterday. Well his ankle wasn't getting any better, so he went to the ER. He broke his ankle. He goes in for surgery tomorrow. They have to plate and pin his ankle, so he is out of commission for a while. He THINKS he can still do things with a cast on, but he's sadly mistaken. No way is he going to do concrete work or construction work with a cast. I did find him some other good help though, and Craig is going to hire him part time for concrete and remodeling jobs. Robbie is a friend of Ashton's, and a real go getter, plus he is not new to doing that sort of work. So Craig will be getting another good helper and they will be able to knock some of the jobs out that they now have. I'll have to sit down with Craig and see how he wants to schedule things, as scheduling things isn't really his forte'. He's better off at selling a product And somewhere, my garage still needs to get back in the schedule. But Robbie is also great at roofing, so we should be able to get mine knocked out in a days time, which will hopefully be tomorrow. I'm still going to help out Craig today, or I should say Ashton is. They have to finish up a door on a business, then pour concrete this afternoon. Then I'm next for tomorrow

Once my roof is on, then there will be a couple of weeks without anyone being here. That gives the wife and I time to stain all of the cedar siding. I don't like having all sorts of materials to work around, so I order materials as needed so we are not walking around materials where they would be in the way. It helps to keep things cleaned up, and it also helps to keep scrap at a minimum.

So no pics yet. We did finish up some blocking yesterday afternoon, and finished up the housewrap, plus shingles are all sitting on the roof now. So all is good there for getting the roof on, hopefully tomorrow. Once it is all on, I'll have a couple of pics

About 10 gallons or so of stain, a roller & pan, a large brush and cold beer. All of the stain will go on first before it gets cut and hung, then I'll probably go over the complete garage again after it is up to cover the cuts and to make it uniform.

Todays agenda though......helping Dan and Ashton to pour 185' of curbs at a factory north of town. We have to fine tune a couple of radiuses on the curbs here in a short in prep for a 2:00 concrete delivery. But before that, we have to finish up a rear door at a strip mall. The door was put in by Craig and Dan. Yesterday we had to cut out some asphalt so the door would open all the way up, added seals to the inside of the door, and all we have left to do is caulk around it.

Hopefully Dan is coming down tomorrow to roof for a while. Once it gets too warm to be on the roof, Ashton and I will probably go back up north and help strip the forms off of the curbs. Maybe the garage will be done by the end of August But with Ashton helping Dan, and me doing what I can, maybe Dan can keep his head above water for a little while.

Well....no roofing tomorrow. Craig wants Dan to finish the job up he's on (I know, I know) so it looks like Saturday for roofing. Tomorrow we are going to strip forms and move dirt for backfill. Then Dan said that we'll have that done tomorrow, and it's back down here.

As far as today....what a pain.....literally. I have a bad back, but I took on the task of screeding the concrete in the forms, then went to edging the curbs. The bad part...concrete didn't get there until 2:00 in the afternoon. Bad time4 to pour concrete out in the open. By the time I got one section of curbs done and made it to the second section, which was just poured, and had a fast screed on it, the concrete started setting up, and set up fast. It made it a real pain to edge as some of the stone wanted to tear out in the concrete. We did get it though, and the third section that was just poured was really setting fast. Actually we should have had four people there. Two to pour and rough screed, and two to finish off the concrete. It looks good so far, but I keep praying that the sides does not have any blow holes in them. We'll find that out when the forms are stripped.

My roof......one good day would finish it off, but with the heat and humidity coming back up, it make take two half days and starting early in the morning to get it done.

And again, I'm fine with the schedule on the garage. I was hoping to have it done by my B-Day in August, but as long as it's done by the middle of September, I'm good with that. And I did tell Craig that I didn't want any money for me, but to make sure he pays Ashton every week. I'm just there for moral support and to help where I can. I could save myself a couple of thousand by telling Craig to forget things and I'll finish it, then hire Ashton and his friend to finish the roofing and whatever else needs to be done, but to me, that would be a ****** thing to do. Ashtons friend does construction, and the garage would be a piece of cake for him. But I made the deal with Craig, and he fell on hard times now with his broken ankle, so I will still go through Craig to get the garage built. I wouldn't **** in the middle of his dinner plate just because he can't work now.

So no updates this week on my garage, but hopefully there will be some this weekend that I can post some pics from.

Kevin: you are a saint and i hope to meet you in person someday or at the pearly gates. any chance when you have a minute can you take a few pictures of the outside of the roof where it attaches to your old roof before you put roofing material on? and maybe a few full shots? i'm not sure how you did it and was just looking to see for my own benefit. sorry your scheduling, weather and Craig's injury is putting more issues, but it really seems like it's still moving forward which is good. any inspections yet since you started framing?

also i used to go to a chiropractor for several years for adjustments for back and leg pain and decided to buy an inversion table at Costco and it was by far the best $200-300 I've ever spent. i had a bottle of Advil expire that was half empty and i used to take a bottle about every 2 to 4 weeks. if you need more information just ask, but using it 5 minutes a day has not only helped me it's kept friends and clients from scheduled surgeries too.

Back to roofing tomorrow. But only for a few hours until it gets too hot to roof. According to Craig, Ashton is done working here because another coworker of Craig's has came back to town. He does finish concrete work and will be working on the apron and sidewalks while Danny roofs. BUT....I am going to hire Ashton to help me get things fine tuned as far as rafter ties and such that I can't get up between roofs to do. We have a few to put in. Then if Dan needs Ashton to help him, then Craig pays. I know....it sounds like a ***********, but I don't want to see Craig lose his other jobs because he broke his ankle, and Craig IS a little tight when it comes to spending money, so I'll back door him. I'll pay out one way to save money the other way Actually the garage is far enough along that I could even fire Craig, and hire Ashton and his buddy for less and finish things myself, but I would never do that to a friend that I had a verbal contract with. So things will be back on track tomorrow, and it will also ease up Dan's workload also whether him and Craig realizes it or not.

And for ones that may not understand, things work a little different in my area, and friends do help friends even though they charge money for their services. It's hard to explain, but in the end, it works out the way I want it to, and saves me quite a few thousand. A lot of people don't realize, but if you play your cards right, you can spend a few hundred to save a few thousand, and in the end, everyone is still happy, plus Craig can keep up with his other jobs also even with a shattered ankle.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!! This garage is not meant to be built according to Mother Nature. It was supposed to be a nice day today with a very slight chance of afternoon showers due to heat and humidity. Dan was here at 6:45 to start roofing. We got the ladders out, the nailgun, nails, airhose, and Dan went to the roof. At 7:15, here comes the rain. It rained for a solid 3 hours. So we decided to put things off until tomorrow when there is no chance of rain. Dan leaves....the sun comes back out. I can almost bet that as soon as the roof is done, the drought will start around here.

But on the other hand, I had a few boards to put in and got that done. aside from the roof and siding, the outside work is done, so I'm going to call for an inspection here shortly. Once the inspector is here, he can tell me yay or nay, and if nay, he'll tell me what needs to be done, but I think it will pass.

I did get a quote on two garage doors. Clopays, insulated, 2" thick, raised panels with the top panel having a row of windows. These are 10'w x 8'h doors. $2150 for both installed. I had figured $2000 for doors when I was estimating prices.

And I'm getting ready to go over to the lumber company and price some 6" lap, cedar siding. I get this in, then I can get busy staining the siding.

Hopefully I'll have some sort of progress pics before long.......Hopefully!!!!! I'm not promising anything though as far as progress. That is up to Mother Nature.

Believe me....I AM SURPRISED!!!!!!!

Just got back from the lumber company and had a quote of $6100. The other local lumber company gave me a price of $4100 a couple of weeks ago. So I'll have to get in touch with the first place again and see if the $4100 is still a good price or not. I don't know if there is an alternative to cedar lap that will still look like cedar or not, and that I can stain. If not, then I'll just have to bite the bullet, but darn, that stuff is costly.

The 8" beveled that we are using is the "clear" grade, i.e., no knots and it is pushing $2.00 per lineal foot. We're doing the project in stages as time permits and a 1200 LF quantity was ~ $1.75 last year.

At the least expensive end of the grade range, you'll find lots of knots, some of which have been glued from behind at the mill to keep them from falling out plus a few empty holes here and there.

You may want to compare grades to make a true apples-to-apples comparison to get the most bang for your buck.

Also, specifying the lengths you want is important. They'll ship anything from 6' to 13', based on what they have on hand. Your supplier may work with you to get the lengths that will give you the least waste.

Good luck and you'll love the tiny, needle-like splinters that cedar gives.

Kevin: i'm probably going to side my house with Hardy board and maybe make it a 4 inch reveal. i bought the LP siding that is still holding up after 20 years in most places, but not looking good in others. it's only cosmetic because i have a cement block home that i could just paint if i wanted to.

i'd love to do cedar, but even though i don't have a huge home and i have a cedar mill i can buy it from it's just too expensive. it also needs more attention like staining every 3 years or painting more often than Hardy.

most of the builders building homes for less than a million would use hardy board siding because of the expense of cedar and their was usually 20-30% waste because of knots and cracks.

I always liked the look of cedar shingles, never owned anything with them so don't know what kinda of maintenance that you would have but it seems like concrete siding would be a good alternative.......

I think a tighter gap would also look a little better....

I want a lap siding as every building on the property has cedar lap siding. And whatever I get, I want something that I will be able to stain. Currently I stain our cedar lap with a solid latex stain. And there may not be an alternative to the cedar lap. I don't know. My current siding on the house isn't a clear wood as it does have some knots, but not a lot, so I can live with some knots in whatever I get for the garage.

Kevin, the siding on our old house was cedar and we went with Hardie plank on our new house. It really looks identical, but it's a little more expensive - but the maintenance is a huge savings in labor and paint. We had to re-do the solid color stain on the old house every 3-5 years, but the paint on the new house should easily last 20 years. Just let me know if you want me to send a photo for comparison.
