Before I posted the one about the kids, I was gonna go on about this truck going on 65 years and still working like a frikkin dog. It's amazing. After the dump run I drove it around the city for an hour to pick up fencing. Starts with a push of the button every time (Push Button Start - NOT a new thang!) and gets like 20 mpg.

Long live my Merc!

That gets 20 mpg! My wife soooo wants an old truck. I want to go a few years newer so that there is room for two adults and a child in the front. Old trucks are cool!

That is cool E-tek, old trucks should be useful. Reminds me of my old 37 Chevy truck, I used to take it to junkyards, home improvement runs, and daily driver. I still miss that truck.

Thanks guys. She is running beautifully. I had to rework the linkages a bit, but now it's all smooth. The original 46 motor used to be hard to start when hot, not this one. At this point I will likley re-build the 46 and keep it on the stand!

I don't know Jack, YOUR "work dog" (911) shows as good as it works...just not currently!

BTW to e-tek, What are your long term plans for the Merc? Will it always be a work truck or are there restoration plans? Hot rodding plans? (I assume not with the rebuilt stock engine)

Merc trucks were only offered in Canada.

Just to confuse things further, in Australia we never got Mercury trucks but as many of our earlier Fords got imported from Canada (part of the British Commonwealth) and not the USA. So our Aussie Fords often looked like Mercuries.

My F4 Ford truck for example has Mercury park lights on the fenders / guards unlike the US Fords that has the park lights in the top section of the grille.

A little trivia then on mine: In 46 they weren't using chrome due to the war effort, so the original trim is all nickel-only. The prevoius owner swapped it out for chrome trim off a 47 (I think). I still have all the nickel-only stuff, I think it looks even better.

People think the Mercs where just Fords with extra trim, but they are very different - from the hood to the cab slider window, the tailgate ("MERCURY") and the gauge package.

Hot, I hadn't used it in a while, last time was to tow my 240Z 1500 miles from Vancouver to Saskatoon (1/3 way across Canada!). Then I hooked it up here to pull the Merc from where it was parked in the yard when I had the engine out. The last time I used the bar was last weekend, when I bolted it to that beige shed you see and dragged it across the yard!!!

Finally got the old flathead engine, as well as a dog I bought out of the shop. Both are early blocks (44-48).

The truck currrenlty has this 53 in it,

but I have a nice early block waiting to go to the machinist. Then I'll button it up with all the parts from my original engine.

Also cleaned up the 240Z exhaust system and hung it up out of the way....

Rebuilt the carb yesterday for another spring full of action!!

This year I'm going to POR15 the undersides and letter the doors with "E-tek Restorations". Breeze was kind enough to give me some "antiqued" lettering tips!

You are right. I have driven a 1939 Ford pickup every day for 17 years. My kids grew up in that truck.

Bit of an old thread....

I STILL have the 53-ish Flatty in the truck as the two blocks I bought first were junk (silly me for not looking more closely). I JUST now bought two more complete early engines and hope one will go back into the Merc - the other in a rod I'm building.

The truck still gets used most weekends in the summer. Everyone loves it - especially me!
