Kids broke garage door?

I was at work. Wife said while she was putting baby to sleep, older kids were messing with garage door constantly closing and opening it. Now it will only go down about a foot and go back up and will not close.

I have checked sensors and they are registering and operating correctly. The door moves freely if disengaged from the trolley. But the trolley will not go past a certain point.

Any advice? How could they have caused that? Previously no issues with it.

Garage doors often have to be adjusted or "programmed" for where to stop in the up and down positions. Older ones had knobs to rotate for where the up and down max positions are.
Newer doors have to have the position set electronically. Maybe unplugging it or hitting a "clear" or reset button might be necessary, then make it go up and push a button when it should stop, and make it go down and push a button when its all the way down.

Get the brand and model number off the label and google the operator's manual to find out how yours needs to be done. Sometimes it takes several attempts to get it right.

Maybe you should make the kids help straighten it out. They are probably better at googling and programming vcr's etc.

They also need a teachable moment about "if you mess it up, you need to help fix it". Hopefully, you don't find that it's beyond repair and needs to be replaced.

Don't ask.
Will the door go up and down without the opener connected? If not fix whatever is binding it.
Will it go full travel if you hold the button? If so reset the travel stops.
