Well, there is the thread on moles. I actually have gophers. I know the exhaust down the hole could work. Are there other methods? The gopher does not make tunnels like a mole. Just a mound of dirt where it pushes dirt out of the hole. I tried flooding the hole, gopher still around.

I am very close to just using my tractor exhaust with a hose, but are there any other suggestions?

Propane.....run a hose down the hole as far as you can and turn the propane on slow....propane is heavier than air and will sink to the bottom and the little fellows will be gassed.

If you really want to have fun run a igniter cap like they use for model rockets down the end of the hose. Run the propane for a bit, disconect the hose from the tank, move everything away...a little further...then set off the ignitor cap. ***** all the oxygen out and they are blowed up real good as well.

Be careful ....oops I see this has already been mentioned in the mole thread....

One of the local communities does the propane and used to blow it up as well but folks didn't like the idea of blown up critters...just dead gophers....

Traps work but need tending. Dig out one of the mounds and place the trap a little inside the opening. The gopher will come to close the hole and either bury the trap or get caught. Tie the trap to a stick or piece of pipe with some p cord.

Alternately you could get some road flares and a leaf blower. Find a fresh mound, dig it out to find the tunnel. Place lit flare in tunnel, use the blower at idle to push smoke through tunnel system. Have a shovel handy if the gopher decides to pop out. If not he'll die of smoke inhalation. Win win.

I had a house a couple of years ago with a terrible gopher problem. Tried everything, traps, hose down the hole, poisen, you name it. The little fuckers were so brave, they'd pop up and stare at ya until you moved at them. The only thing that worked was a cat. We took in a stray, named her Patches and every day I would find headless gopher bodies on the porch. Kinda freaked us out, always wondered if she had a pile o' gopher heads stashed away somewhere. Never had a problem with gophers again.

Gasoline. Take about a half a cup, toss it down the hole, wait a few minutes to allow the fumes to fill the tunnels, then throw a match into the hole. There should be a "whump" and the ground will shake a bit. The concussion will knock out the critters, the oxygen will be depleted thus killing them while they sleep. Very humane and rather fun. Just be sure there is no flamable material near the opening and also do not stand over an excape hole since some material may blow out. (ask me how I know.)
I have used this method on ground hogs for years and it never fails.

I'll swear by the "Gophinator" (http://www.traplineproducts.com/). I tried all the other methods before discovering these little traps. I started trapping 2 years ago and to date I've totaled around 25. I just trapped one yesterday. I now set traps at the first sight of a mound.

Go to the URL above and watch the video. I followed this guy's method and have been rather successful.

I think I will try the explosive method. Most likely propane, seems easiest and guaranteed to get down in the tunnel. I know the power of oxy acetlylene balloons, let's just say the boom was loud enough some cops showed up.

Thanks for the ideas.

Just ordered some Gophinator traps. They look better than the Victor traps I've been using with so-so results. My real concern is that some one from PETA will spot this thread and raise hell!

3 stories of catching gophers. At my old house last year we had gophers. I tried the poison pellets, the sulfur bombs, those stupid buzzing devices....no luck, just wasted money. So I decided to try the cheap inexpensive metal traps from Home Depot. The next time I found a fresh hole that hadn't been back filled yet, I dug it up a few inches further and set the trap. Next morning? Dead gopher. This was in the backyard. I had the same success if the front yard about a month later. BOTH TIMES I shoved the dead gopher back into the tunnel as far as I could push it and then filled it in. We didn't have a single gopher for the rest of the time we lived at that house, which was about 7 months.

Story #2 - we just bought our first place and have been busting our butts on some home improvement projects, one major project being the clearing out of the massively overgrown front yard and sod installation. I knew we'd get gophers eventually and sure enough, about 3 months after we finished we started noticing the mounds. Thinking I could just kill them using the same traps as before I tried that again and those little bastards kept filling the tunnels and dodging the traps. These bastards were good! I kept trying that for a couple weeks but the backyard was getting really bad and the front yard was starting to get hit pretty bad. So I decided to follow the next tunnel in the front yard as far as it would take me. I ended up digging a 6 or 7 foot sod "flap" that followed that fresh tunnel to the edge of my porch. When I got to the porch I was able to stick my whole hand in there and move it around so I decided this must be their headquarters. This time I didn't waste time with the trap though. Instead, I took 3 of those sulfur bomb sticks and taped them together and twisted the wicks together to make one mega bomb :) I lit the fuse and shoved it in as deep as I could and covered the open end with a scrap piece of plywood overnight. Came back the next morning and filled the hole with dirt. We've been gopher free in the front yard for almost 2 weeks now. We did the same in the backyard but we just noticed a new hole a couple days ago. We'll get him though.

Story #3 - we have a dog, he's a boxer named Jackson. Jackson loves when we buy him little furry squeaky toys. Sometimes he finds his own little furry squeaky toys. He's awesome! He does a great job of spotting a fresh tunnel and he'll stand there with his nose buried deep in the hole for 20 minutes. We usually let him dig a bit when he finds a tunnel and so far he's been successful at physically pulling a gopher out of it's tunnel and playing with it to death twice! (once at our old house and once at our current house). It's funny because he just wants to play with them so he's swatting them and flinging them through the air and the whole time that stupid gopher is trying to stand up and act as big as it can but it's no match for Jackson. He'll just keep playing with it until it dies, which is good...I want those little bastards to suffer!! I have video but I don't know how to post it yet.

Anyway, getting rid of the gophers is tough!
