Killing Ants: What actually works?

My kitchen and bathrooms are currently being invaded by ants. I have deployed the Andro ant stakes outside and Combat Max ant gel indoors with limited success. Can somebody recommend products that really work, preferably something readily available and pet safe? Does anybody know what professional exterminators use on ants?

Agree with Terro. You want the type where a scout will take the bait back to the colony and wipe them all out.

yup - gotta kill the Queen

but... if you have something that ants like, then a new colony will just take over

so you need a deep cleaning and remove all food particles

When they get bad around here the Terro isn't enough. The only thing I have found that works well is spraying the yard and foundation walls. That is not pet safe. If you figure out something that is pet safe and works I know several people that would be interested.

food grade diatomaceous earth. It's non toxic and will kill any insect with a hard exoskeleton. Its like microscopic shards of glass and cuts them up. It's like flour and it doesn't evaporate or stop working over time (unless it's physically blown away). We got a bunch of sand delivered that was infested with fleas and they invaded the house and the yard. Sprayed everything you could imagine and couldn't get rid of the bastards. diatomaceous earth was the only thing that finally got rid of them

Here in Southern California we fight a never ending battle against the ants. We have Argentine ants here, and they have endless colonies under the whole city and the colonies have multiple queens. So I win battles but will never win the war.

Note that sometimes the ants want something sweet and sometimes they want something protein. So I put out traps with both.

I actually have a supply of coffee cup lids, and I put a squirt of the sweet gel on one side and some of the protein flakes on the other side. I have some heavy covers I put over the lids so they don't get kicked around in the house or eaten by our cats.

I use stuff from these guys:

Currently, I use the Advion Gel and Invict Express. But you must pick the proper baits that your ants like. Just be aware that you will likely need both a sweet and a protein bait!

The other key is that you actually want a bait that works slowly and you need to let the ants take it. My wife doesn't like this: if she finds a stream of ants going to the bait she will windex them and disrupt the chain... and that prevents the ants from getting the poison! Very frustrating. You have to let them take the bait as long as they can and give them time to distribute it in the colony so as many of them eat it and die as possible.

I leave 4 of these traps deployed in the house at all times. But if we get an invasion, I deploy one right on top of the stream of ants to be sure they find it immediately, and I beg my wife not wipe them out with windex and to just let them go at the poison for a couple days. Interestingly, at first some die on the trail, but at the end there are very few ants left behind... I can only think they pick up their dead and bring them back to the nest too?

Terro ant bait traps - basically they have borax and sugar water in it, which they cant digest it (the borax). They eat it, take it back, feed the rest and the whole colony dies a horrific death because their digestive tracks are destroyed.

It doesnt kill them right away.. dont stop them or kill them on the way to the trap. You want them to eat it and take it back so it kills the entire colony.

I have used them with great success for normal ants and the carpenter ones too.

note terro/borax is non toxic, and doesnt harm pets. just ants!

Fire ants...
Gallon jug of water, add a cup of dawn, mix up and pour on mound. By breaking the surface tension, it drowns the colony.

Terro is the best! Ants are just part of life in Florida and this stuff works like a charm. I usually try to find where they are coming in at and set the bait near there. Good luck!

I will add to the Terro camp. Have used various other products over the years and had an ant problem in the basement this summer. Terro bait traps inside and out, took almost a few weeks before the ants disappeared.

We had ants on and off for years and tried various baits but none got rid of them. Then we tried mixing boric acid powder with food grade diatomaceous earth. One of them came with an accordion shaped squeeze bottle and nozzle. A little puff of that in every crack and crevice we could find inside. Then I took a leaf blower and blew a bunch in the crawl space under the house through all the vents around the foundation. On a dry day with no rain in the forecast I spread it on the ground around the house. We haven't seen a single ant in 2 years. Stuff is harmless to people and pets. Cheap, safe and effective.

We had a problem with pavement ants late this summer. They were on the kitchen counter and the bar in the basement. My terminex guy used a clear gel, I'm guessing it was Advion. They all crowded around it for about two days, then we never saw them again.

Get Tempo.....liquid spray that you mix with water, 8ml of tempo per gallon of water.....works on ants, bees, flies, etc.....guaranteed to work....its expensive, $75 around here for a small bottle but it lasts a long time as you don't use very much

I use Terro and Diatomaceous earth as well. I will sprinkle the Diatomaceous earth outside along any trails. The ants disappear fast. When they get inside I use the terro bait. It takes patience. You want to wipe them out right away and clean the area. If you can leave them alone to get the bait for several days they will feed and take it back to the colony.
If I can find where they are coming in. I place the bait there and make a ring of vaseline around the bait and entry. They won't cross the vaseline.

This applies to outside mounds. We have lots of varieties of ants here in AZ, including Fire Ants. Amdro was originally developed for Fire Ants, but I have found it works on every type of ant mound. Spread it lightly around the perimeter of the hole, not directly on or down the hole. The ants will carry it down to the queen. Next day, a bunch of dead ants around the mound, and they do not recur (at least at that location).

Terro that stuff works, i have used them and recommend them to anyone with ants. I like the little gel traps, cut the lip and then place along the wall in their path. dies NOT kill instantly, it is a bait, they get it take it back then gone in a few days. worked everytime.

Talstar. Not pet safe for a couple of days, but it's not ant safe either. Had an old tree with a HUGE colony of ants in it. Drilled a couple of holes near the biggest nests & applied Talstar. Ants poured out like a ruptured Exon Valdez! Saved the tree. I now spray the entire yard with extra emphasis on the beds around the house & entrances to the house.

OP...i see you are from the 909. We had them too in Riverside/San Bernardino. I live in LA now and typically have them in the summer, but this tear, like you, they have invaded the winter, as well.
