Killing time in a small "2 car" garage

I haven't been on GJ much the past week and a half. A week ago Tuesday my wife's back went out. A visit to her chiropractor, an orthopedic urgent care, and a visit to the ER that Tuesday night summed up that day. Then my son and I were out over the weekend for a class field trip. This past Monday the ortho doctor reviewed her MRI from the ER visit and she could clearly see TWO bulging discs. The ER said there was nothing wrong and treated my wife like an opioid junkie. To say that we are pissed is an understatement.

So far the orthopedic doctor is treating it with PT and my wife has seen a nice improvement so we're hoping to avoid a surgery... But I also haven't been able to do any of my projects since I have been having to take care of everything in the house and help her as much as I can. Picked up my daughter from college on Tuesday and I have to drive her back to Purdue on Sunday morning so that pretty much kills this weekend too. Oh well...

Good luck man. I wish her a quick recovery!

Thanks rodpoa. She's improving, but it's been almost 3 weeks.

I told my wife that I am going up to my buddy's place this weekend to get my plywood. I need the wood and he wants it out of his shop... So today I have to do a bit of HoneyDo list stuff, then I'll get a little bit of time in my garage to blow out the dust and make room for the wood.

Did not get to clean out the garage as I had hoped... But...

I did make it up to my buddy's place to get the plywood. :rocker:

It's all 3/8" and thinner, but several sheets are really nice and most of it is just plywood. There are maybe 3 sheets of beaded paneling so I will keep those for the backs of my basement bookshelves and a few other little projects. I have a lot of 3/6" and 1/4" ply so I have plenty of material for making drawer bottoms too. There is definitely enough 3/8" ply to finish the bottom half of my walls in the garage and part of the ceiling. With furring strips on the ceiling, the 1/4" will be fine for this garage too.

Took me almost 90 minutes to unload it all by myself since I had to carry it about 50 feet from the trailer into the garage, then stack it on its side in the garage.

The smallest pieces were just stacked on the workbench for now:

Nice score on the ply. Looks to have some really nice grain patterns. Is it cabinet grade ply?

It's all cabinet grade ply. It came from a kitchen cabinet manufacturer. The 3/8" sheets have the plastic "veneer" on one side that is used inside the lower cost cabinets. It's heavy plywood, but the plastic side will be installed facing in so it's easier for me to paint.

I will glue up panels to make thicker sheets for other projects.

I have one 2'×8' unilateral ply sheet that can be bent into curves so I'll make something fun with it. Probably a soffit to go over my dart board...

Did you place it on the floor with wood underneath it to keep it from warping as it absorbs moisture from the floor?

Uh... not yet?

No, I just unloaded it. I had to get it out of the trailer last night because there was a chance of rain today and I'm bringing the trailer back to my buddy tomorrow.

I need to rearrange and sort it. Some of it already has water damage. No warping, just stained.

Interesting I have never seen unilateral ply. My dad always bends his by sawing kerfs in it.

I think there are a few layers that are perpendicular, but most are glued up in a unilateral fashion. I know it doesn't split or fracture when bent, but it does have a minimum bend radius. It was used in a commercial furniture plant that make larger diameter round pedestal bases that were veneered with high end exotic veneers. The piece I was given is 2'x8' and it was like a piece of under cooked spaghetti when carrying it.

My dart board is mounted to a piece of 3/4" 4'x8' plywood that is attached to the wall. Looking at it and the wall today, I decided I'll keep that where it is and I will just put the 3/8" ply on the bottom half of the garage on either side, then use 1/4" ply for the top half around most of the garage since I don't really mount anything to my walls anyway. If I need to mount something to a section of wall that can't be attached to two studs, I will just replace that section of 1/4" later.

I have an idea for the "soffit" design that I will build for above the dart board later. The dart board will also get a new custom cabinet later on that will incorporate the upper soffit so I can take it with me when we move.

I have so much stuff in the garage right now and it's supposed to be in the low 30s this weekend. That's going to make maneuvering stuff and getting the plywood up a fun job.

And I might be bringing home another project bike...

Nice score on the plywood, that will be useful! I have a ton of extra wood and it was clogging up my new garage so I built a 8th shed to store the wood LOL:dunno: Maybe I have too much stuff? Or maybe not enough sheds LOL:thumbup:

Thanks Sean. I try to use up the wood as I get it, but I wasn't expecting there to be so many sheets of the thin stuff. I'll definitely use it though.

My goal is to build a lean-to shed on the back side of my garage. I just need enough space to get all the yard tools and equipment out of the garage.

The other day my wife showed me a house for sale locally. It's a smaller house (which is great, we're going to downsize when we move) but with a couple acres of land, an attached garage, a pole barn, and a detached garage. And it was well within our budget, but still in this shittown and in the wrong school district. I have to admit it though, I seriously thought about going out to see it since it checked all the boxes of what I want when we move out of Indiana.

I've been really busy with everything but the garage the last few weeks. Last night and today I finally got caught up on all the GJ threads that have had updates over the last few weeks.

With my wife's back injury, my plans after Christmas have changed. I can't do a lot of the work I wanted to do in the basement with a house full of people, so my focus will be a few small updates in the basement so I can finish the trim down there and make my bookcase shelves in the garage. That means I have to get the plywood sorted and start getting it hung on the walls. We'll see how much time I actually get to work in the garage.

She's doing great. The PT has been really helping. She's no longer having back pain, but now the focus is on stretching her right leg and glute muscles. In a couple weeks her PT changes to building core strength. Her PTs said she won't need surgery and probably won't even need the steroid shots.

I braved the cold about 30 minutes ago. I turned off the heater and opened the OHD to blow out dust. I think I'm going to head out to the garage tonight try to to get some stuff put away so I have some more floor space freed up. I also looked at my "ceiling" and I'm going to have to add some framing to get the ceiling mounted.

Believe me, I can't wait to get back to the bikes! And a '94 Suzuki Katana 600 will be joining the herd soon.

 Thanks -Brent-

He's looking for the title. If he can't find it this week he is applying for a lost title.

The bike is painted an ugly dusty rose color right now. I'm trying to decide what all I will do to the bike. A late '80s air cooled GSX-R 1100 engine bolts right in to the frame. Or I may just put 750 jugs and heads on it and make it a proper sport touring bike. It will really depend on what I can find for aftermarket windshields and hard bags. If I don't find any I like, the bike will be stripped naked and get a Bandit swing arm, new shocks, and Race-Tech goodies in the fork until I find a good GSX-R 750 fork.

got the same bike sitting in a shed lol. was my brothers first bike

Too funny. I haven't decided how I'm going to build it yet, or rather, how much I'm going to put in to it. I'll probably strip it naked initially since I have to repaint the body panels anyway. Then I'll decide if I want to upgrade the swing arm and forks.

I passed on the Katana. It was cheap enough, but it wasn't running so I had no if it would run or if it would need a complete rebuild. I can buy a running later model 750 for what I would put into the 600 if it needed any more work than just an instrument cluster and the usual electrical bits I would replace.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my GJ friends following along!

I have the next 4 days off work so I plan to get a few basement projects done as well as spending time in the garage. Hoping to get some of the plywood hung on the ceiling, then getting my workbench further along.

LOL! Nope, no pictures of the trees. We don't have a real tree and we didn't have room for our big artificial tree this year so my wife put up two smaller artificial trees.

I'll have to post a pic of my droid. My wife got me the R2-D2 BT enabled droid that you control from your smart phone. My son got the BB-8 so we have two of the four droids.

Nice job. Always good to have a happy wife =:D

Bret

Thanks. They were a bluish grey to begin with. I painted them the same white as our cabinets.

Sunday I'm installing the garbage/recycling slide out in one of the existing base cabinets. We were originally going to add another 48" of base cabinets and floating shelves on the wall opposite the table, but decided to move a bookcase shelf on that wall. It makes the kitchen look a lot bigger, which is crazy.

Tuesday a new toy, I mean tool, arrives...

It's been so cold that I haven't wanted to work in the garage. I have the heater set to 36 degrees... just warm enough to prevent freezing. I may still try to get a little garage time Sunday and Monday to start hanging plywood on the ceiling.

My dad bought a 1978 KZ 650 brand new and he still rides it... A friend of mine bought this bike here in the video and I thought you may like it based on your taste in bikes:

Very cool! I love my KZ650. I can't wait to get mine resto-modded!

Those new Z900RS bikes are sa-weet! I've been trying to talk my neighbor into getting his endorsement and buying one. If I could afford a new bike it would be on the short list.

New Year's Day I installed the slide out rubbish and recycling bins. I had to empty the cabinet and knock out a shelf, but it wasn't too difficult. I found 13 bottles of wine and 2 bottles of champagne that I had forgotten about too. So now I'm looking for a slide out wine rack. If I can't find one I'll buy a slide out organizer and just mod it into a wine rack.

I don't know why I waited so long to install it... I guess I really thought we would put it in the other cabinets later, but it really made more sense to put it in that cabinet since that is where our garbage can has been for the last 17+ years... and that is right under the counter where we do most of our meal prep.

Thanks Squash, Happy New Year! We generate very little trash but a ton of recycling. We can go 5-6 weeks easy without filling our curb can, but barely make it the two weeks between recycling pickups. Both curb cans are 75gallon rollers provided by the city and I almost paid for a second recycling roller.

We had a recycling bin that used to be next to the shelves I moved in the kitchen by the door. Now that it's in the cabinet, it won't get to over flowing before the kids take it out since the cabinet won't close.

With my little kitchen projects/upgrades complete, my wife is very happy and our kitchen looks huge. The last little things my wife wants are floating wall shelves. I may add more of the IKEA under cabinet LED lights too since I really like having them.

Now if it would just warm up enough so that I can work in the garage agin, that would be great!

How are things in Mass?

Mass? Cold, man.
Those little kitchen projects make all the difference. And yes, the small size of the bins is such a benefit, can’t just ignore it. Noticed you went with the ball bearing full extension version. My parents went with a cheaper version, it’s not a year old and grinds and drags it’s way out, horrible.

We've been stupid cold here in SW Indiana too. HIGHS in the teens. It got up to 29 yesterday and it felt warm... then it dropped back down to 9 degrees today.

Yeah, I went with the Rev-A-Shelf brand with full ball bearing slides and lifetime warranty. Definitely worth the extra money.
