Kinda Blum hinge ignorant

I'm using Blum concealed cup hinges for my new kitchen cabinet doors, 5/8" overlay. i've reworked the old 1973 cabinets which were full face frames with exposed surface mount hinges, and cut the frame stiles back for the newer face frame concealed cup hinges (all new doors). My goal is the minimal gap between the doors (1/16" to 1/8") both for the single doors and the double door sets which have hinges mounted to the same stile as the door for the next cupboard door openings. So for 5/8" overlay, I cut the stiles back to 1-1/4" wide (they were originally 2" wide). I have a mostly Blum 38 series concealed cup hinges for 5/8" overlay. But I think I need Blum 38N partial hinges for the doors that are hinged onto the same stile. I would need the same 5/8" overlay, but the hinge point centerline has to allow the door to swing without contacting the other door.

They used to have an excel based hinge configuration that helped you choose the correct hinge and base plate based off door thickness, overlay width, etc. It appears it’s been replaced with an online product configurator. Have you tried registering for this and seeing what it can figure for you?

Can you go to a clip on hinge instead of a compact?

Thanks. I registered to use the Blum configurator and was trying to load a setup like my under sink cabinet using Compact hinges. It kept dropping out of the configurator when I'd try a combination it cannot do, which means the Compact hinge selection was not right for the application. I want a minimal protrusion door swing on one side and the configurator would not allow it with a Compact hinge. So I need a Clip on hinge. Either I use the Blum mount plates for the Clip on style, or make spacers inside the cabinet to position the hinges.

In essence the Clip on style moves the door swing pivot centerline a bit away from the frame and the door swings within the frame side panel, with a paralleogram hinge swing. The Compact uses a single hinge swing. I should have studied this more before I bought the hinges. I thought the Compact could also achieve the swing style of the Clip style. Oh well, live and learn.

The clip on are better in every way. Compact hinges are the least adjustable (cheapest) version.

If you want 1/16" gaps you will need a fully adjustable hinge in addition to a perfectly sized door.

I just determined that to make the RH door under the sink swing as I need it to do, and also close within a 1/8" at most to the pull out door for the trash bins, I need a Clip style hinge for a frameless cabinet, even though my cabinets have narrow stiles for 5/8" overlay doors. So I'll need to notch the current face frame to allow the space I need for the pullout tray under the RH side of the sink. I can make the notches with my Dremel to produce a square cut notch, so the Clip hinge mounts to the side panel of the cabinet like a frameless cabinet door with 5/8" overlay. When the door opens the hinge arms will swing through the notches.

If I can piggyback for a second:

Face frame cabinet, 3/4" overlay. Should have sized differently, now debating if I want two 23.5" doors or two sets of narrow doors. Can I have back to back doors on a single style?

Yes you can have back to back doors hinged on the same stile, even at 1.25" wide. But as I found out, you have to use the Clip style Blum hinges and not the Compact style Blum hinges. So I have to make minor adjustments to suit the Blum Clip hinges.

I resized the old 2" face frames on my 1973 built in cabinets to 1.25" wide for 5/8" overlay concealed hinges. In retrospect, I could have left the upper cabinets as is and just used 1" overlay concealed hinges. But I resized all the lower cabinet stiles to 1.25" wide so I could increase the drawer widths as I went from old full frame style to nearly frameless. So I did the upper cabinets as well to provide a larger opening for access and to look like the lower cabinets. The old drawers were replaced with all new drawers with undermount Blum slides, and all the drawers got wider, deeper front to back, to significantly increase storage. My wife loves the updates.
