$150.00 per month?

I think they should have a day rental plan or something. I am not sure how many people will jump on board at $150.00 per month.

That is about the going rate for MakerSpaces iin bigger cities. Many people only go for a month or two while working on a project (or they get a sponsorship for a while on a bigger project). This way, the space only needs a certain (smaller) number of members to maintain profit.

Yep, We've got one south of me. Unfortunately too far south of me given any day's traffic. 30 miles = 1 hour.

Oh, and yeah, I'd pay $150/mo in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd move my whole operation there.

Well, most of the fabrication aspect.

I wonder how the consumable stuff is handled. Bits, blades, tooling, sandpaper, welding wire, gas, etc. Is it supplied or do you have to bring it?

This is cool. 150 is fine if you have a business plan. maybe expensive to sit around and loiter there tho. seems targeted at people who might need a bank loan to buy 10k in gear only to build a protoype or small lot sales.

if any of you guys local check this out, would be interesting to hear about the management style and more of the details.

I think I'll take a tour this weekend.

Its not often I need stuff like this, but my wife is getting into quilting and some of that sewing stuff is $$$, and as an added benefit I get to use some neat tools that I might not have to pay to maintain or repair?

excellent!

if it pans out lol

Im part of local NorCal version of this.

Hopefully maker spaces like this become more popular.
$150 a month, pssh thats a cheap cross fit membership.

The Epilog/ULS laser machines, Shopbot (CNC router table), and workspace alone are worth it along.

I've been to the TechShop in Austin. They are adjoined to a Lowes. There is an impressive amount of machinery there. It's been a while, but from what I remember, some consumables are included, others you have to pay for, but it is at market value, with little to no mark-up. All equipment was included except for the waterjet. It was an extra $1/minute to use that. I believe you could use your own consumables for some of the equipment.

There was a daily fee in case you didn't want to pay for the whole month.

It's all relative... If you have a need and use for that stuff, $150 a month is an absolute steal. If I had one near me I'd pay more than that for it. here's hoping this catches on.

We had a space like that here for a while. They even offered classes, like welding, basic machining, etc. But I believe it has since gone out of business. There apparently wasn't enough interest to keep those expensive machines running AND pay the overhead costs.

I wonder if these places are like other places which have membership such as gyms. You know? where everyone treats equipment respectfully and replaces things where they took them from, wait their turn to use things, wipes down benches when they're done so as to leave the place **** and span, ready for the next person to use, doesn't hog equipment to themselves and cap it off by behaving in a civilised manner at all times.

I've set up a non CNC machine shop, it's wholly hell expensive. $150/mo makes me feel like they're losing money.

Thats almost the exact formula. At least most places.

But also, always comes down to the community using the equipment/space. Right now I am the local ball buster on cleaning up / proper use etc...

It seems to me there would be a lot of problems with the machinery getting hosed up by people not knowing what they are doing. I assume they have a staff of operators to help people? How do they keep people from hogging the machine time?

Wow, Our maker space is having a hard time getting members and they are only asking 35.00 per month. But they don't have near that much equipment. I might have to take another tour of our maker space again.

I believe it would be great....for a couple of months. I wonder if its a by-month basis, or longer? Powder coating and water jet makes it almost worth it, if you have enough projects to support the fee.
