I'm usually a sucker for stuff like this, but I'm not digging this one.

No lid?
Not 5 gallons?
Can only pour from one side?
Strength of handle?
Do they stack?

I don't have too many complaints about the old style buckets, except I wish the plastic thing on the handle would last longer and the bucket itself would be more resistant to UV. There's a reason they haven't changed the bucket for years - if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Ya, and probably costs $10 or more................ LOL!

I'll stick we all the free ones I have around the garage and yard. That way, no one would likely pinch the bucket!

Drywall buckets is all I use. And they are so good that why Lowes and them now sell them with their name on them for $5.

That might excel at pouring but it simply does not have the utility value of a standard bucket IMHO...as I try to avoid painting as much as possible I use buckets way more for utility than for holding and pouring liquids.

Wine buckets are all I use.......drink the wine then you have free buckets. The neighbourhood is littered with them. Have sold hundreds of them for $2 each over the years.

Hope HD improved the plastic quality, because the 'Homer buckets' are brittle & weak.
I agree with the spackle bucket fans; that's all I use.

I like it.

I can understand the criticism listed above but what's wrong with innovation (my wife hates the old buckets and this is marketed at women).

Made in the USA. Can I get a Hell yeah?

FJ 432 - Indeed! You beat me to it, but I'll say it anyway.

Interesting redesign of the 5 gallon bucket. It's not designed for contractors. Notice the suburban every-mom using the bucket in the photos? It's for domestic use. They know that contractors aren't going to pay more money for features they don't need.

And it's made in America. Good for them.

Clearly they stack, just scroll down in the link in post #1.

I agree the handles look questionable.

I find the whole thing amusing; it was reportedly designed because women could not carry an "old" bucket full of soil. Ya don't say???? Can they carry this one if its full of soil??

I'd say it is to buckets what the Ridgeline is to pickups, but then that's perfect 'cause its meant to appeal to the Ridgeline buyer. I'd guess a couple people at Wired drive Ridgelines as their "truck." :D

Main drawback....you can't turn it upside down and sit on it.

Second problem. The dimple in the bottom for the handle will make it more difficult to scrape the bottom when you forget to clean out the mud your using.

Otherwise, not a bad design

I'd agree it's a niche bucket. It's (probably) perfect for the women. I'd say it might be good for the older crowd that has trouble with their hands that don't work like they used to.

For the average DIY guy, contractor or farmer, I don't think these will be good for you.

I do applaud somebody for putting a redesigned touch on an old product and for HD carrying the product line, especially a US made product.

I like the attention to aesthetics and to onshoring US manufacture. But there seems to be a bit of hype here, I gotta say.

I've had a US-made Rubbermaid bucket for a decade or more that has a grab indent on the bottom. Two of 'em, in fact. The bucket is sorta rectangular, so wide things can fit in without making it bigger than it needs. The bail is heavy wire (not plastic) and clips to the rim so the bucket can be hung neatly against a wall.

I'm not sure what's really new here except a design refresh. Good for them, I say, but this is not the iPhone of buckets...

Also anyone taking bets how long they'll be built in Boston? One day they'll just quietly switch to Made in China. Sorry to be the pessimist (realist) but $ is $ and HD exists to make $

You're right... however how would this forum exist if we couldn't ***** about the good old days when they were made in the US and how the US models are fetching premium dollars on ebay.:bounce:

Been out about a year, 3.5 gallon $7.50, patented "pocket" on bottom for tipping out contents sure looks like the one of the cat litter bucket I just dumped in the trash.

Leaktite is the brand, looks like there is a whole line of various bucket types from them.

We are horse people so I've got a bunch of stall buckets (flat on one side) that I use for most everything that won't ruin the bucket or poison a horse. The wife buys laundry detergent in 5 gallon buckets so we use those for oil, paint and the like. This new bucket actually sort of reminded me of a stall bucket at first glance.

I use many types of buckets and am very careful what buckets I use for what. Let me explain, for example the wine buckets are food grade for the MUST the wine stores sell for winemakers, therefore I use for any food related production we italians do. One example is when we make our tomato sauce or when we make our eggplants etc. to hold the product before canning or bottling.
I reuse my joint compound buckets for anything heavy so that I may control the weight especially if my wife will carry the bucket. Old paint buckets for lighter materials and or to carry misc. tools that do not have a dedicated tool box or materials for a job.

I prefer the buckets that I recycle since they are stonger than the Homer buckets.

i could really care less about a bucket but i have to give home depot credit where it is due trying to keep high-quality domestic stuff on the shelves in general. i got a lowe's gift card for christmas and that place is just a joke nowadays, full of cheap MiC junk at very high prices!! it was a real challenge trying to figure out how to spend it.

Couldn't agree more. I used to be a big Lowe's vs. Home Depot advocate but they have really cheapened their selection dramatically over the last few years. I only go there now if it's some ridiculous closeout stuff like all the good electrical tools they had. The new Southwire stuff is a joke. I hope Klein sues them for basically being a Chinese made carbon copy.

I could see it being good for somethings but not for most of what I use a bucket for. You can't mix drywall mud or thinset or mortar in it because of the dimple in the bottom. Maybe for some things like water or oil dry it might be nice but I seem to go through enough drywall compound to have enough buckets for free.

I agree with most of ya'll in the fact that this bucket most likely won't hold up with the tough jobs most of us use buckets for but I'm guessing that it will be perfect for the wife. I think she will get allot of use out it.

I think it is some great marketing, good way to sell some buckets.

To give you guys a reference point, I buy a pallet of 5 gal pails a couple of times a year. We package our pressure washers soaps in them. I do get a quality bucket with a bang on lid with a pour spout. My cost is right around $5 a bucket. I realize that my quantity isn't high so they can be bought better by the truck load for sure, but they aren't inexpensive to buy.

Exactly what I was thinking, too.

Having indoor cats, I spend more time trying to get RID of buckets than acquire them.

I use cat litter buckets for washing the cars, mopping the floors, collecting kitchen waste for the compost pit, mixing Sakrete, I cut them off with a saber saw for drip pans, I saw them into strips with a bandsaw to make garden marker stakes... and still recycle about 3/4 of them. Jeez, last thing I need around here are more buckets. lol.

Looks like the buckets you can buy that are for washing cars....usually around 3gal I guess.

I really do not see how this is an improvement on a 5gal bucket that product is put in, ie paint, drywall mud, grout, etc.

But for washing cars....uh, I guess whatever floats your boat.

The article that was linked by the OP stated that buckets were something they sell by the millions. If they think they're going to sell these by the millions they're way off base. The old ones sell by the millions because they're cheap and disposable. These are neither.

A whole industry of accessories exists around the existing 5 gallon pail. Tool holders, parts bins that fit inside, seat tops, foam cooler inserts, food grade buckets, screw on lids (great for storing pet food) and probably lots more than I haven't encountered yet. The buckets are cheap if you look for recycled ones and reasonable enough in cost to purchase new. I suppose the new Home Depot bucket will attract some buyers but it wouldn't surprise me to see them on clearance sometime in the fall.

Anyway, we should be glad they chose to manufacture it in the USA and that they're trying to innovate. Not every product can be a home run. Enough base hits and you can still win the game.

To the OP, thanks for sharing!
