Hello, we are remodelling but I have an old kitchen exhaust hood that I would like to keep due to the aesthetics. it has an internal blower with integrated L,M,H buttons. It has a 6” duct that then (this is new as it was relocated) transitions to a 12” duct.

i would love an external blower for noise considerations. however all the ones i have found have speed control based on potetiometers and would not be compatible with my l,m,h buttons.

i was thinking of two things and wondering whether anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts:

1) find a way to interface between the buttons and a potentiometer
2) take the exiting fan and place it remotely (in some sort of housing)

No 1 would be easy to do with a couple of resistors. But you need to know how potentiometer the unit is expecting would be wired first

I have this schematic but not sure I know how to read, although I wonder if you connect the two outputs that go tot the motor to a different motor it will work just fine.IMG_1148.jpeg

I was going to do something similar by removing the fan in the hood and installing an inline ECM fan. They have remote speed controllers. To turn the fan on and off I was going to use a contactor, using the hood switch to control the contactor.

A potentiometer / solid state speed controller increases amperage dramatically as you slow it down, which can cause the breaker to trip and wires get hot. So you want to use an EC Motor (ECM) fan to avoid that.
