Kitchen Range

My long-distance sister-in-law claims to have a kitchen gas range that will not be able to ignite the surface burners via a match or other flame source during an electrical power failure. I was unable to discern the make/model of the unit.

Does anyone know of a gas range that will not allow this? We have a newer (5 years old) GE gas range that relies upon electrical power to ignite the oven burner/broiler but still allows gas flow to the surface burners without external power.

Federal DOE regulations require electric ignition of virtually all ranges rather than using a pilot light.

Many electronic igniton ranges can have their surface burners light using a match, but not all.

The oven however will not function without electrcity.

Under to old DOE rules if the range had an interior oven light or an electric clock (ie had a power cord) it must have electronic igniton. In other words only the most basic Plain Jane range had an oven that would work without electricity.

Retired out of the gas appliance business for a couple of years, but I don't know of a range with some type of solenoid valve controlling gas flow to the top burners. Can you maybe get a picture from her of the range and rating plate? It may be stuck to the frame in the broiler drawer area or under the range top.
All the residential ranges that I worked on could be lit with a match if the power was off. Another thought, is her gas still on? Its happened more than once the gas company had turned the gas off.

I've never heard of one that wouldn't light with a match. It's pretty easy to hear the gas flowing. If it has been sitting for a while, it could take a while for gas to flow. Like one to two minutes. I guess it condenses in the line.

I have a thermador pro range and during power outage you can only manually light the front right burner

I have a Miele gas cooktop. It has flame detect sensors and auto re-ignition if a burner goes out. If it doesn't light on the second try it turns the gas to that burner off.

It does have a manual override for use during a power outage. To use during a power outage you have to push the control knob in then turn it on while keeping the control knob pressed in. Light the burner manually then keep the knob pushed in for 10 seconds. If the flame goes out it will shut the gas off to that burner even during a power outage.
