My $.02 is to make sure that one of the basins is big enough to lay your biggest cookie sheet or pan with handle flat on the bottom. It makes cleaning them much easier and keeps water in the sink instead of all over the counters and floor. I'm about to ditch my 33x22 double basin (split 50/50) for a large single basin. A lot of times, the multiple basin sinks sacrifice having a large usable sink to get multiple compartments. For me, one large sink basin with an integrated, sloped drainboard would be my ideal configuration.

On an unrelated note, love the Riviera!

Check into the granite sinks, too. When we did our remodel, we installed a 50/50 split Schock Hauser granite sink and it not only looks awesome, but has held up very well. No scratches despite abuse from lots of heavy cookware.

If you have and use a dishwasher often I would recommend a single basin. Last house had a single basin and loved it. New house has a double SS basin and everyday I want to rip it out. Just waiting for the time to do it.

Last house also had a restaurant type wash faucet and I love that too. Seemed like I could pressure wash the dishes clean before putting them into the dish washer.

Single basin is the way to go. People for years thought the double was an upgrade because of the pre-dishwasher days. I have a 33x22x14 single and love it.

I also have a single deep basin and love it. I would not recommend a farmhouse sink though if you are doing stainless, ours got scratched all over quickly which is a bit of an eye sore.

We have a sink that has a larger basin with a smaller on the right. Neither the wife or I like it. The smaller side is about useless. The larger one takes forever to fill and is a waste when doing a few dishes.

Another vote for deep single basin. How deep is up to you, but I'd make sure your largest stock pot fits easily under the faucet. As for basin size - like Pluribus said - make sure you can put your largest pan/roaster/cookie tray flat in it or it isn't big enough.

Deep single is the way to go. Also , as others have said make sure your largest pans can lay flat in it. Something else to think about is to make sure it has a nice thick layer of soundproofing sprayed on the underside of it so it doesn't sound tinny(spelling?)when faucet water hits it.

Kohler makes a great sink with a reduced height divider. Their "Vault" sink.

It's about a 60/40 split and the 'smart divide' comes up about half-way. Allows for cleaning larger pans and baking sheets while having a good way to let some things soak while still being able to use the disposal.

Wife and I were just talking about this the other day. We have been thinking about redoing the kitchen and the first thing she asked is if could keep the sink. Its a single basin and not real deep but we both love it that way. Cannot figure out why you would want two smaller ones ??? Our large baking pans fit in it and that makes it easy to wash them when we dont want to put them in the dishwasher.

We have a large Soapstone farm-house style sink and really like it.

I saw a sink a few years back that was a stainless under-mount that had a small, shallow corner prep sink built in. It was marketed to those who wanted a large single basin but didn't want the expense of a separate prep sink.

One of our biggest regrets with our kitchen remodel is not putting in a separate prep sink so that sink would be nice for those times that dirty dishes pile up while food is still being prepared. I don't recall who makes it.

Must be a small dishwasher....

My dishwasher has a rinse setting, so one would load, let it do a rinse and hold....and wait till the end of day to do a full cycle.

If you're so god darn lazy ;-), I'd say go with the stainless. It takes a beating and then some. Elkay has tons of options at various pricepoints

I'd ask her but it may lead to me installing a new sink.
My opinion: 1 for wash, 1 for rinse, what would the third be for?

Three basin sinks come in two varieties. The first variety is "the real deal", straight out of a restaurant, the second variety simply has a dinky little third sink for vegetable prep work.

The purpose of the third sink in the real deal 3 banger is sanitizing. The dishes are washed (sink 1), rinsed (sink 2), sanitized (sink 3). The sanitizing solution is a very weak bleach/water mixture.

It doesn't matter how good your automatic dishwasher is, you are going to be doing dishes in the sink, and it's usually going to be the big pots, pans and bakeware. With sinks, strongly advise you go big, go deep, go three. That's my personal preference, in that order. My dream sink would be a three bay stainless steel farmers sink with pull down sprayer. Don't even know if such a beast exists.

Oh, and stainless steel. Heavy gauge SS, not flimsy lightweight.

This is the sink I got. Big enough?
shopping

Kohler stages 45".

I have Bosch dishwasher and you can wash just the top rack. Do that or just throw in some dirty tools to fill it and go to town
