Kleencut scissors

So I have a pair of 8" kleencut scissors that the threaded rivet holding the two blades together broke. The threaded end was like a split nut and the ears both broke off. I was wondering if anyone has tried to repair something like this before. I already went to the local hardware store and tried finding a machine screw with a nut to replace it but the head and nut would stick out on each side quite a bit more than I would prefer. Any thoughts?

Grind the head and nut down.

For future documentation I just drilled out the hole and tapped the one side so I could use a screw and lock washer to keep the joint tight.
