Klein CL1000 multi-meter issues

Bought a Klein CL1000 last winter.

Needed to do some battery/electrical system trouble shooting on the motorhome today.

Four Group 31 (12 volts DC) tied together to provide 24 volts of power. I was able to take "good" voltage readings with the Klein (all between 12 and 13 when looking for readings on the 12 volt portion).

Went into the house to research something. Came back out to M/H to get some more readings.

Now the Klein's display jumps around from 0.00 to 6.** to 25.** to 0.00 and continues to bounce around.

I opened the hood on the Suburban and tried to check the voltage on its 12 volt battery. Same thing is happening.

I've got the Klein set to the first click next to "OFF" ... "V" with a straight-line and a squiggly line over the "V" which I believe means to check the voltage for both DC and AC.

The icon for low battery is NOT lit up.

What is going on? Anyone have this happen to them? Any suggestions?

I was expecting a Klein multi-meter to have problems.

Did u push the orange 'select' button? The orange flat line represents DC but u have to push the select button to go into that mode...

Anything in ORANGE requires pushing the ORANGE select button to br able to into the mode. The buttons with orange have dual modes.

Is the AC/DC select switch in the right setting?

Duh!

Thanks! I don't use a multi-meter often. I don't understand why so many of the multi-meters use these obscure codes and icons rather than something simple like "AC" and "DC"!

Or voltage, amps, resistance, capacitance.

Please bear with me. I'll be posting the same question again in a few months when I need to use the Klein again!

Because those are the offical electronic symbols. If u were to read a schematic, it would have the same 'obscure' codes and symbols. Perhaps u should familiarize yourself with the symbols!

And the orange select button is not much different than a FN(function) key on a keyboard that allows the F keys to have multiple functions!

Klein really does not make DMMs. Just like Fluke does not make linemen pliers.

I don't know who makes the meters for Klein, I suspect it is UEI. Fluke does not use a second function key for DCV OR ACV on any of their meters I am familiar with.

Thanks. That makes sense. I don't use a MM very often and when I do I'm usually only checking voltages. Will try to remember the special button!

I have a Klein mm1000 for home use myself,I bought it solely for working on my camaro project and other small DC or ohm projects. I hate having to turn the dial and push the dang orange button every time I turn it on. Yep,1st world problems.
$100 at Home Depot so I guess that's what you get. Works good at home though.

Fluke 88 in the shop at work.
