Klein D2000-48

After cutting a Senco Angled Finish Finish 15-Gauge nail and a steel wire of almost the same size (not hardened) with my Klein D2000-48, I found that they have a slightly handle/pivot play.
They have absolutely zero jaw damage and cut everything flawlessly!
The pliers was brand new, my Channellock E338, for example, has absolutely zero pivot play.
I'm thinking of bringing them back to the HD store for a full refund.
Does anyone have such a problem?
Any slight play in the pivot is normal?
A brand new Klein D2000-48 had zero play.

A little bit of play isn't uncommon. Is it enough to interfere with the function of the tool, or just enough to be visible?

I'll take a little bit of play over having to spend an hour breaking them in with a bottle of oil.

The play is visible and I feel it but not huge, as I said, they have absolutely zero jaw damage and cut everything flawlessly EVEN with pivot play.
New they were tight, and I spent couple minutes to breaking them with WD40.

I would just return them and get a new set, see if it happens again

Cutters get play over time and its time to replace them when its visible. The blades won't be aligned and overlap, resulting in a rougher cut. If these are relatively new, then return them.

If you have a pair that can't be warrantied for some reason, then there is a way to use a center punch on the pivot to reduce the play, but it requires some skill to punch it at the right place to slightly expand the metal at that spot. I've had new pliers with these punch marks.

Will definitely return.
I found that the blades are not aligned and overlap eachother, and because there is pivot play, they overlap even more,as a result, they do not cut very well on small parts, but rather chew.

So, the Klein D2000-48 was returned back to HD for a full refund. Great customer service btw.

I found that another one Klein D2000-48 in the store also has a slightly pivot play, and this is on brand new pliers.

My Channellock cuts with less effort, no pivot play, cheaper and Made in USA.

Go figure.

Channellocks are not made in USA, generally. If your set are keep them!

For example, Klein Slip-Joint Pliers are Made in Mexico, Klein Classic Klaw/Quick-Adjust Klaw Pump Pliers are Made in Germany, in fact rebranded NWS pliers.

Channellock Slip-Joint Pliers are Made in USA, all Channellock Straight Jaw Tongue & Groove Pliers are Made in USA.

So, Channellock is more Made in USA!

I bought their flush cutters a while back and was very disappointed. It stopped springing back and the blades were horribly misaligned. Only used them on plastic zip ties too.

If you're pleased with the performance of your channel locks why did you even buy Klein?

Lastly...tools do break in without breaking. There can be acceptable play if there is zero performance drop.

I don’t want to start a new topic so I’ll ask here.: I got the new Klein D2000-9NE Lineman pliers, they were a little stiff when opening and closing, so I used the Break-Free CLP and now ... they are quite loose and have a little pivot play.

I think you have bad luck. I have a 2 week old pair of D2000-9NETH in my bucket at work and they have zero play and opened and closed easily out the gate.

The email I received from Klein Customer Service regarding the pivot play on the Klein D2000-9NE:

So, a slight pivot play looks like ... normal.
Every message I sent to the company about any "problems" or poor quality control, was returned with a response that it is normal.

While it’s disheartening to hear a manufacturer refer to play as normal we also have to take into consideration these are $30 pliers not a $300 torque wrench or $1000 diagnostic scanner. Do they cut what you are trying to cut? If so use them when they no longer cut throw them away and buy a new pair. My beater pair has plenty of pivot play but I can still cut most things with them just fine.

I have a pair of 2000 series Klein dikes in my pouch at work that had a slight amount of play in the joint from day one. They cut everything I put between the jaws and haven’t broken, dulled or gotten any more loose in the 4 years of hard use I’ve put on them. Quit staring lovingly at those pliers like they’re your new bride and just put em to work!
