I got one of these and it's operation is spotty.
Turn it on, one press or long press, and it glows green. It's supposed to, right?
But get it near an outlet, even push the nose into the hot slot and 9 times out of 10 - nothing.
I've seen it used and react by just getting it near a hot lead.
What am I doing wrong?

they are pretty good testers. we give them to all the apprentices we got. we tell them to test a known source first them test the device that needs testing then go back to the know device to just make sure its working.

Two of us at work call them "death sticks". I haven't owned one in years because I have found better ways to do things.

When they work well they are a wonderful tool.....

Electrical testers that are not dependable should go in the trash.

I have the Klein NCVT-2 and it's worked fine and survived several drops. I know a few guys with the Milwaukee tester with the LED light and they like him. The Fluke 1ACII is pretty much the standard for testers.

If you feel your tester is not operating properly, I would exchange it. Any testing device is not something that you want to wonder if it's working properly.
