I'm going to buy some of the mini bolt cutters and I see multiple variations in the eight inch range. Does anyone know (other than the handles) what the differences in all the models are?

Different handles, some have a spring, some have locking mechanisms, some have tether points, and there are a few where the jaws are angled a few degrees off straight.

The 71 01 200 is the basic tool3027798D-1A35-401F-88E2-03C93283000D.jpeg

The 71 21 200 has the jaws angled, making it easy to cut on a flat surface.

The 71 31 200 has a notch at the base of the jaws so round objects don’t slide forward.

The 71 41 200 has angled jaws and the notch.34213F2C-7E65-4D50-95EE-26DA097C39C8.jpeg

The 71 02 200 substitute comfort grips, then repeat all the options above.84FD98B9-9616-4058-B35C-45157E58ABC0.jpeg

If you haven’t figured out the Knipex numbering system, they supply a decode!

You sometimes see letter suffixes on the part numbers. At least some of these relate to the packaging. It can be a plastic bag (standard), a card backing for hanging, or a cardboard box.

I have about three sets of those bolt cutters. They can be real life savers, but they are expensive, otherwise I would buy a few more.

I had one fairly new set where the jaws failed - just sort of crumbled. My opinion is the heat treat was off somehow. They were only used a couple of times. I very rarely ask for a replacement on something, but these hadn't been abused at all. I contacted Knipex and they sort of reluctantly replaced them. The accompanying email had the tone that they didn't believe me but they would replace them this once. The replacements have been fine as have all the others I have.

I had a set of Snapon battery cable cutters that had that notch in them. Although the notch was not OEM. Years ago I was remodeling my first house which had 240v electric base board heat that I was getting rid of. I thought that I flopped the breaker killing the circuit so I could cut the wires to said heater. Turns out that I "almost" disabled that circuit. When I made the first cut it looked a lot like I was holding my welding torch in my hand instead of my cutters. Pretty bluish arc of light sparked almost instantly which almost left stains in my shorts. Those new Snapon cutters that cut like butter never worked the same after that. Turns out said cutters did not like the angry pixies flowing in the wires. The hole blown in both cutting edges were not very uniform and I kept them as a reminder to never "almost" shut the power off before cutting. Luckily they had the optional anti X-ray rubber/vinyl handles that saved my bacon.

That's standard procedure with German companies handling warranty claims, nothing to worry about.

What do you guys like for sizes of these? 180, 200 or 250?

I don’t own any Comfort grip knipex but if they offered the 250 in comfort grip that would be a no brainer but for whatever reason they only offer the 250 in plain dipped.

opinions vary but I prefer the version without the notch, have the spring loaded comfort grips without notch. Without notch allows for better cutting of flat stock and smaller diameter rod which is what I deal with.
