Anyone here have a pair of these really large Knipex cobra pliers? I really want a set but have no had a chance to put my hands on them. I really like to use large Channel lock type pliers for larger oil filters at work. just easier to use it as a multi task tool instead of carrying around a pair of pliers plus a filter wrench.

I know that knipex tools are great. I have never seen/had one that was not up to snuff. My only complaint about the channel locks is that the straight jaws do not always grip like I need them to.

The large 22" knipex are nice. Their only down fall is they don't open as wide as a 20" channellock. I don't know how handy they would be for filters, kinda bulky for that most of the time.

Here is a photo of the XXL beside the XL

A few photos of the jaws-

Here they are compared to the standard 10". It makes them look like a toy.

Honesty they are quite clumsy to use. They can be hard to grip one handed and you can't put a pipe over the end like a large stilson. But they do come in handy now and again. I like them for tightening fan belts on tractors as you can just grab the whole alternator.

The XL size is far more useable.

The XXL Cobras are truly heroic in terms of size and strength. I bought mine specifically to get a strut cartridge out of a housing that had a badly mangled retaining nut. I tried it with a giant pipe wrench, and it just rounded the nut (originally octagonal). I tried it with a 12" Cobra and 2 foot cheater pipe, and I STOOD on it with the assembly in a vise on the floor. It bent the handle on the pliers, but it held fast and did not strip. So I dropped the coin on the XXL Cobra, and it bit into the nut and broke it loose after standing on it, without bending the handle.

This was for a 1990 nissan maxima rear strut assembly, and that one job saved me more than the cost of the tool. Apparently nobody actually sells the strut housing for that car for less than $400.

So in my situation, yes the tool was absolutely worth it. Every time I use it now is just icing on the cake. No other tool I own has the absolutely massive gripping and torque ability on rounded surfaces.
